Hello!

I will be taking a TEFL course towards the end of January, 2011. I am working on getting my visa and was looking for some clarification. I know that I need either a 60-day tourist visa or a Non-Immigrant Visa, but am a little confused on which one to apply for. Since the 60-day tourist Visa does NOT allow any type of employment, I think I need the later one.

Here are my plans:

Take the 4 week TEFL course then look for a job afterwards. However, I have a one-way ticket to Thailand because I do plan on landing on TEFL job.

So, like I said, I think I should apply for the Non-Immigrant Visa, but am not completely sure. I am also waiting on a letter of enrollment from the school..

Thanks for any/all help!!

-Stacy

Do you have a degree (the legal requirement for obtaining the "B" visa)?

a) If yes, you have (or will have) a degree then you can find employment from abroad and obtain a "B" visa.

b) IF no, you do not/will not have a degree then you do not meet the legal requirements for a work visa and will have to come on a tourist visa, find and employer with the connections to "buy" you a "B" visa and then make a visa run to an adjoining country to get your "B".

If (a) then legal employment is pretty easy to find (locally or from abroad).

If (b) then full time or legal employment (with visa and work permit) is difficult to find you will need several thousand dollars in your bank account to get you through until you can find a job.

Yep, I do have my bachelor's degree & have previous experience teaching/living abroad.

Since I don't have a job lined up & am only FOR SURE taking the TEFL course, would I still apply for the Non-Immigrant B visa, or would it be the ED visa since I will be "studying" for a month?

IF you are going to study here (less than 60 days) then you need either a tourist visa (60 day) or ED visa.

If you will study longer than 60 days you need the ED visa and after you have completed your TESOL cert you can change to the "B" visa here.

You need 21 days or more remaining on your visa to make the change to a non-immigrant "B" visa or you will need to do a visa run to a neighboring country to get a new visa after you find a job.

Thanks for the quick response. Now I just have to wait for the director of the course to send over the confirmation of enrollment in the course!

Hey Tom,

If (b) then full time or legal employment (with visa and work permit) is difficult to find you will need several thousand dollars in your bank account to get you through until you can find a job.

Can you clarify this a little better? Sounds like you can't obtain a work (b)visa without a degree but here you seem to be saying it's hard to find part-time work or full time with a (b) visa without a degree. Either you can get one or you can't.

It is virtually impossible to get full time, LEGAL work with a "B" visa and work permit as a teacher without a degree BUT this is Thailand and there are exceptions to everything but as a general rule...

I think you will find that most transient teachers (not tied here by a personal relationship and in it for the long haul) and without a degree are working illegally on a tourist visa and doing border runs every 3 months. Far too many language academies cannot or will not take care of the paperwork to ensure that their teachers are legal.

And as to the last part, money. People without degrees are far more likely (if they can find full-time work) to find jobs in the 20-30k baht range. While you can live like a Thai on that money you will find it difficult to enjoy life as an expat. This is especially true if you live in BKK.

Additionally, it will take from 1-2 months to find full-time regular work (legal or otherwise) so you will need living expenses (rent, food, transportation, etc) to last until you find work. Then you will need to fund yourself for another month until payday.

For someone (with or without a degree) coming from abroad and without a job and accommodation lined up you are looking at about US$3000 to get you through.

Can you do it for less = probably, but I wouldn't want to try it.
