Dark Machine,
Thanks for clearing that up. (You wouldn't want to clean toilets here anyway. Your boss would be some PT elderly woman who can't speak English.)

Well, if you can give a little more information, people here might be able to offer some advice.

Here's mine.
Assuming you have a bachelor's degree, you are minimally qualified for entry level work in Japan (ALT or eikaiwa instructor). March is peak hiring season, but if you are eligible for a WHV (not all nationalities are), you might want to try testing the waters with PT work at first. I say PT only because you probably don't have time to get hired in the March time frame, but who knows?

Your move.

OK well. I'm 22, Graduated with a 2.1 BA in East Asian Studies from a 'Russell Group' University in the UK. I immediately took a CELTA course after my finals and at the same time held down a job as a research assistant (which was nice because the Uni paid me in 'busaries' rather than straight wages).

Since September 2010 I've been unemployed, I couldn't find any jobs in the UK around my area. So I decided I wanted to work in East Asia. I'd studied Japan most out of all countries and went for a two week holiday over new year to do some travelling and suchlike with a friend.

I have a couple grand in the bank and applied for every job I saw in Japan, no luck though. I was considering just taking a WHV when the disaster happened. I posted up my resume to Daves and got responses from people in China and Korea immediately, a Chinese University has offered me a nice looking job and ex-teachers from there have recommended it as a first step.

Problem is, I don't speak Chinese, I do speak some Japanese, and my heart's in Japan, not China. So I'm not really sure what I should do. The disaster hasn't put me off at all. I just felt that maybe I shouldn't come over at such a difficult time asking for work when people have lost everything.

When did you start applying, how many apps have you put in, were they in response to ads (or just cold called), and have you customized every application to the employer (or just sent a form letter)?

Well I'd say about 20-30 apps, and I customised around 10 of those (as in wrote unique cover letters rather than just changing names and certain lines). I've been looking on several sites including this one, but there haven't been masses of adverts. And I haven't cold called anyone, I heard that was a bad idea and basically got you nowhere. Also several jobs I would've applied for said that they only wanted US/Canadian citizens, so that was a bit lame.
