I'm here in Bangkok on a tourist Visa. It expires on April 1. I am getting a job at a large school here, but have not signed a contract yet. I am receiving curriculum this week to look over so the job is solid. no worries there. Question 1: Do I need to wait to get my contract before I go to Immigration? Question 2: If I go past my stay date and then I go in, is it going to be a problem?

If i need to I can fly down to Malaysia and get a new visa. I just am curious what the best option should be.

1) yes, you need the contract
AND
other paperwork from your employer
AND
21 days or more remaining on your tourist visa or entry stamp to change your status (in country).

2) Yes, an overstay is a BIG problem. It will get you fined and if you are caught (other than at the airport on your way out) can get you arrested and locked up / ordered out / deported. Immigration lockup is NOT a place you want to wait to get it all worked out.

-Go to a neighboring country.

-Get a 60 day double entry visa (rather than a visa waiver, entry stamp on arrival (15 days at a land crossing and 30 days by air). This will effectively give you up to 90 days before a border run is necessary and up to 6 months to get your "B" visa (although it is illegal to work on it).

-Return.

-You have 39 days to get the paperwork in to immigration (and still have your 21 days remaining as required to change your status) before you have to think about another border run.

-The other option is to get all your paperwork done and go to a neighboring country to get your non-immi "B" visa. Enter and have your employer start the paperwork/apply for your work permit.
