Hyperbole...say what?!
Don't the recruiters get 3,000 for placing us out here, and don't the unis need teachers because of a sudden influx of students... |
I'm with Isabel... ????????????
First off, this thread is about UoN, which doesn't use recruiters. What influx of students... other than what has happened every September since I was there the first time in the 80s. And, you have to choose between the numerous grapevine estimates of what recruiters are paid...

Agreed. Get back on topic here people!
By the way, a certain UoN teacher just signed a letter denouncing his colleagues just so that he could his job back after being non-renewed. The same colleagues who got him a meeting with the Chancellor in the first place. Quite the popular kid on the UoN campus these days, I'm sure.
If this is what the place is causing people to do, then why bother seriously considering coming here. The atmosphere now is pure poison.

The reality is that all contracts are renewable, or not, at the pleasure of the employer, who is always right, no matter where you live!
If one person sought to reconsider his position, all power to him for having the cojones to do so! Is he the only one?
I believe the malcontents have misread the cultural situation in the Middle East, in the assumption that they can say and do whatever they like, very loudly, without consequences. On reflection, some may wish they had chosen a much less aggressive response to their non-renewals.
Spiteful remarks, and 'stirring' are no way to win friends, or more importantly, to influence people. |

Well you have hit the nail on the head. Is it no wonder so many in the gulf would be on the dole queues back in the UK>! |

1. The employer is not always right. People and the Omani courts have proven this time and time again. Go and read the posting on the non-payment issue.
2. "Malcontents" would not be a word applicable to most of those non-renewed at UoN. Being upset, disappointed at being treated badly by an employer is a natural and very normal human reaction. A non-renewal is a non-renewal. People have the choice to take issue with it or not. Just because some choose to take issue with it directly with the employer doesn't make them "aggressive" neither. If you read what I wrote, it never bad-mouthed any one who didn't take issue. It addressed a particular individual who sold themseves out to the uni against colleagues who initially supported the individual. That I do find disgraceful, regardless of where anyone is employed.
3. No one here on this posting is attempting to "win friends". It's a discussion and information forum with limtations. I'm sorry that you find my account of the behavior of a certain esl'er unsettling, but as urban mentioned above, it wouldn't be the first time and it won't be the last. Let's just say, it's the first time it's happened, that I know of, at UoN and it demonstrates just how far vulnerable people are being pushed by the university administration who are acting like ouright bullies.

HR, I can agree with some of your remarks, and have some sympathy for the situation you find yourself in.
Malcontents is a fair description, by your own admission, you are not happy, and if the aggression was not clearly evident, I would not have used the word. I suppose the 'individual who sold himself out' will be the best judge of that.
It is an unpalatable fact of life, that for many reasons people get 'canned' and in truth, may not always deserve it, but that chip on your shoulder can get very heavy if you let it.
There has to be a time to move on, look forward, and prepare for the next chapter in your lives. As you say, not the first, won't be the last, and I am sure that you have all memories of the UoN, and Oman to cherish. The signs say......Take only memories, leave only footprints. |

Dear Turbster,
I too agree with some of the more positive aspects of what you have pointed out (I may leave a footprint, indeed).
Alas, this posting was brought as a warning to people who may be considering applying for a position at UoN; as an informative warning based on current facts, not as anyone's personal chip on any shoulder. Teachers denouncing teachers by way of a signed letter, is quite extraordinary, whatever way one may care to look it. People have choices, no matter what they may think. In addition, the effect this kind of action has on the already low morale of the concerned group and upon the other teachers with whom this person works, is not exactly positive. It's as much a point about the university itself as about any individual.
Anyway, the university has turned for the worse and it looks like it may stay that way for some time to come. As was suggested by some previously, that will most likely come down to whether the uni keep on Fumbling Director or not.

So, can we take it that the denouncer will be waiting to welcome new staff in September? |
