Hi,

I'm wondering if Public Universities frown on their foreign teachers working side jobs for private companies. Also, does a working visa preclude one from working for more than one company?

Thanks

No offense, but this is a widely commented on subject and the rules are clear.

My post will be to answer your question and try and help you rather than smugly insult you and not help you at all.

Most contracts state in no uncertain terms that you are exclusive property of the school. This means any extra work will probably be for them, and more than likely unpaid work. Well, the people renting you out will be paid, but not you yourself.

I'll give you an example:

Many many years ago, I worked for a certain chain of schools. While I was treated according to the contract and paid on time and in full, I was slowly given more and more jobs.

The school would contract me out to other schools and of course get paid handsomely. My hourly wage however remained the same, no matter how much more or how little I worked.

I now work an hourly wage so if they decide to take my time, they pay me more. Yes, this includes office time. They are taking my time, so they have to pay me for that time.

But I digress...

The short answer is yes, they would frown upon it (if they knew about it). Simply on your days off visit another town away from arms' reach of your school or check out the websites that offer part-time jobs on weekends.

Lots out there.

depends on the university.
outside work should be covered in the contract.

my uni contract states i 'should' ask permission
if i desire to teach on the side, and it must not
affect my duties here.

the folks in the foreign affairs office and the
student union will occasionally give me contacts
for paid, outside work.

With my school I work side jobs in a totally non-teaching field and they couldn't care less. I think it is when it is teaching that they sometimes care because as stated, they are not getting their cut.

Thanks a lot for all the useful information. It's good to know there is some wiggle room. I'm getting a lot of offers right now, but none of them have been in the locations I want to work or for the amount I want to work for.

@Whiner: Did you have to negotiate the hourly pay stipulation into the contract? (I'd PM you, but I'm a couple posts deficient)
