Reasonable? Muscat is the most expensive city in the world for hotel rooms, even east Asia is far cheaper...and for better rooms! |

Not a one of those teachers who has been there all those years... and are extremely happy there or they wouldn't stay (in fact, a couple of them left for a contract or two and rushed back)... no... not a one of them lives in a hotel.

Rubbish!!!! Have you never stayed at the IBIS hotel in Muscat. Rooms there vary from 39 - 45 OMR. I do not consider that expensive. Or even the Golden Oasis in Wadi Khabir (cheap as chips but reckoned by some expats to be a "knocking shop" for sad, single, or maybe not Omanis). Never stayed there so cannot comment. But there are other reasonabley priced hotels in Muscat the only exception being the Muscat Festival period, then prices tend to rise as per the demand.
Does anyone know the rate for the newly opened City Seasons hotel in Al Khuwair next the new and much awaited opening of the K&M hypermarket??
Getting a tad off topic here eh????

Now I get it, I see, so I mean just because I am a newbie I am wrong, even though I can compare with other parts of the world and have lived in hotels in Muscat before,...?!?!

And a publication like the economist is wrong?
No matter how you dress it up, it is still an expensive and overrated city if you are looking for good times...
Peace

Duffy,
I stayed last week and paid on my UK card 111.84 per night. I think that might have been a special deal ! Very comfortable. |

But posters here are not looking for hotels or "good times" ... whatever the heck that means. Most people come here to learn about a job.
What do we care about tourist prices? We are talking about the situation for teachers... who are provided housing or a housing allowance. People constantly debate whether Dubai or Doha or Muscat or Kuwait is the most expensive for expat teachers. (everyone always seems to be convinced that wherever they live is the highest) From what I have seen, it depends very much on you and where you spend and/or waste your money.

As most expats go to bars, this kind of proves my argument...if beer was ready to buy at restaurants and shops, would anyone bother to go to bars....probably not? |

Speak for yourself. Few teachers that I worked with over the years regularly went to bars... certainly a minority. Those that drank had liquor licenses and because of the stringent drunk driving laws, preferred to drink at home or at nearby friend's homes.
No one complained of the costs... and shouldn't have as it was their personal choice. I doubt that a beer in a hotel pub is significantly pricier in Muscat than in Dubai, Doha, or Kuwait City. Your one poorly detailed article only referred to room rates.

I can let go your views on alcohol and prices, even if I think you are wrong. Why can't restaurants or shops sell alcohol without the need for a permit being required? Anyhoo...
As for the rest, please email the economist, instead of complaining to me about it, I didn't write the blasted thing... |

urbanversion,

Who comes to the GCC looking for good times? Ok, Dubai has it in spades but it can't be a pre-requisite for seeking employment here in Oman.
All the reason mentioned earlier are true and valid - even if you live in Nizwa, most of the same life is available except the social aspects that Muscat affords like bars and restaurants and the beach of course.
UV - why are you here then? Did you not read the brochure before you came? You should be in Korea or something if you want the teaching job and the western amenities at your fingertips.

Dubai- the love child of Disney and Vegas. My opinion? Aside from some really spectacular, and some really grotesque, architecture, the city is utterly banal and boring. |

"The thing you have to understand about Dubai is nothing is what it seems," Karen says at last. "Nothing. This isn't a city, it's a con-job. They lure you in telling you it's one thing a modern kind of place but beneath the surface it's a medieval dictatorship."
This about sums it up. And it jibes with the Disney comparison- after all, uncle Walt was a right wing nut job himself. |

I read that article before, thanks for the refresh...
Sounds like Dubai is another useless place to live and visit in the GCC, and no thanks, Koreans are more arrogant than, well, you get it.... |
