A few of my friends went to the Job Fair, and it seems people may have been right in saying that employers would show up at the last moment. The line-up was actually fairly impressive:

I don't know if any of my friends got a job out of it, but they certainly got plenty of interviews. I reckon the employer line-up compares favourably with that of previous TESOL conferences, though those more knowledgable on the subject are welcome to correct me on this! |

| You think SR16000 is too low? What were you expecting? Assuming housing and the usual benefits are provided on top, SR16000 a month is about as good as you're going to get as an ESL teacher in Saudi Arabia. It's becoming the exception rather than the rule for employers to pay for children's education in Saudi Arabia these days. |

I was offered 17000 at DAU with some ed. subsidy and a good bit more benefits-wise.
I am probably not average in that I have over 24 years experience, a M.Ed. in TESOL and Ph.D. work completed....so maybe I am expecting a little more? |

I would say a Masters is pretty much the norm for third level employers, and years of experience don't neccessarily translate into salary bonuses, especially after you've got a few years under your belt (ie it won't really make a difference if you've got 10 years' experience or 24 years). 'Ph.D work completed' counts for nothing in salary terms - it's all or nothing.
I'd also be willing to bet that holidays are far better at KAA than DAU, and the latter is known for being very stingy with regard to benefits, barely even covering the mandatory health insurance. Anyway, since this is the UAE board, we're probably getting a bit off-topic here. |

In comparison to the immediate past years I thought that the number of recruiters present was solid.
I found that I obtained interviews (better than 3 years ago when the Job Fair was overpriced and recruiters seemed to only be collecting CV's) and have had several followups since then with either more detailed forms or second interviews completed..
No firm offers as yet but my impression is that is more as a result of the unstable political situation, and wariness about what the new academic year will bring, rather than a decision that my skills might not meet their needs.
I have always found that I have been able to obtain offers as a result of the TESOL Arabia job fairs when I have been seriously looking for a position. |

I don't want to sound negative, but it's been over a month since the jobs fair. I reckon employers will already have made offers by now, though of course there's always the possiblity that some people will turn down their offers and you may still be in with a chance. |

IATEFL in Brighton just finished, with quite a few ME stands in the job fair. I got a firm offer from UAEU (18,000-21,000 AED) is that good? Conditional on finishing my MA, starting Jan 2012.
Kaplan invited me for a second interview. KSA universities & SQU were there too but I didn't get to them... |

| Frankly, the 18,000-21,000 sounds unrealistic in this market, especially for someone who hasn't finished their MA yet. I know that practically all new hires at unis in UAE are not getting offered more than about 16,000 -- and this is for teachers with a min. of 3 yrs. of POST-MA experience. I hope for your sake that UAEU is going far above the current market price. But I seriously doubt they'd give you that much unless you have other qualifications you haven't shared with us. |

Well, it'll be interesting to see if the offer turns into something real.
I do have nine years pre-MA experience - running my own business as a freelance teacher. They liked my 'innovative and entrepreneurial, positive attitude'. Had a long interview with the UGRU programme head. We talked about methods. Since I am currently writing an essay about teaching methods, I did ok on that (backed up with my experience which gives me a credible opinion on methods). It seemed firm, he really wants me to start in September but since that's when I will be handing in my dissertation, I won't have the necessary peice of paper. And a holiday before I start work would be nice.
I'm not absolutely sure that UAEU is where I want to go, nor am I positive it will turn into a real deal. |

Bear in mind that the person interviewing you almost certainly does not have the authority to make a formal offer. The most he or she can do is recommend that you be hired, and your appointment would have to be approved by the university admin, and probably the dean him/herself. In most cases admin are happy enough to rubber-stamp the recommendations of whoever interviewed the candidate, but sometimes they work in mysterious ways and hold things up for weird reasons. I have heard of cases where a head of department was very eager to hire someone, but some higher-ups blocked it.
In short, you can't be sure you've got a job unless you get a formal job offer in writing, signed by the dean or some other big wig. |

The days when Gulf employers offered TEFLers free education for children are coming to an end.
I benefited from this 10 years ago when working for the airline but the current deal with my employer (one of the better ones) is a TOTAL allowance of 25,000 SR. Not per child but TOTAL.
As for salaries, I am very old and very wise with oodles of experience. I can also do simultaneous translation from Klingon into Serbian. I get 17,000 a month.
But in 60 days my years of Moorish Captivity shall be OVER ! I shall then retreat to my Crusader redoubt in the far reaches of Christendom and I never want to see another Moor !

Sorry but this does not sound like the UAEU (or any other tertiary insitution real party line). Those that can conform, not cause any hiccups or cause anything that draws attention - and all this without an MA in hand (with so many with same and years of post grad experence looking) - If you can stomach it for 3 years - go for it.
Would advise you do a search on these forums and others on how faculty have been treated recently. |
