A couple of weeks ago there was one of themost powerful earthquakes ever recorded off the coast of Japan, followed by a devastating tsunami, estimates of which now say killed upwards of 15,000 people, destroying entire towns and leaving untold numbers homeless. If that weren't enough, all six nuclear reactors at the Fukushima plant have been damaged, including their cooling systems, and releasing radiation into the local environment and beyond. Food and water have been contaminated, and many, including a large number of ESL teachers, are leaving the country.

Surprised no one's mentioned it. It was in all the papers and all over TV. Really, really sad.

^ Yes, while undeniably a current event, it is obviously deserving of a thread on the Japan forum as well.

Radiation reaches US from California to Massachusetts

Low levels of radiation detected in Massachusetts' rainwater

By Adeline Yuboco.
+
Boston - Officials from Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) confirmed on Sunday that traces of radioactive iodine-131 have been detected in samples of rainwater taken from an undisclosed location within the state.

Comparable findings have also been detected water samples taken in the states of California, Nevada, Washington state and Pennsylvania.
According to Reuters, the trace amounts of radiation detected in the rainwater samples from Massachusetts are most likely to have originated from Tokyo Electric Co. (TEPCO) Daiichi nuclear power plant, which was severely damaged by the earthquake and tsunami that struck the northeastern region of Japan last March 11, 2011...

Dear Korman DeKobb,

I've already asked friends and relatives living in those states to be kind enough to let me know as soon as they begin glowing in the dark. I figure that may give me enough time to take off for Tierra del Fuego.

Regards,
John

Dear John,

Good idea. But I've heard that radiation has also hit Korea, Vietnam, Philippines - is there anywhere it has not gone?

Have you been in recent contact with any dels? (That's the affectionate name for Tierra del Fuegans.)

KK

It seems that Tierra del Fuego may be the only safe option left.

Radiation Spreads throughout the Northern Hemisphere

Below is the static map based on real time tabulations of the Norwegian Institute of Air Research pertaining to potential releases of radiation from the Fukushima plant.

For the dynamic version of this map, regional dynamic maps as well as technical information click below. Japan and North America static maps are indicated below

You will need to refresh the dynamic map (Global Research, April 20, 2011)
