Thanx for the intro buddy Cool

I get about 4-5 months of vacation a year (depnds on the academic year for each uni (I work currently at 3) and whether you need to give exams during exam periods (1 department I do).

What part-time uni teachers do with that time varies; some teachers work at other jobs (I do for part of it, part of it I travel), some do writing,, some visit familes, some leave Japan and just chill, and some do a combination of the above.

Some schools pay per class, but note that this might be rounded up. In other words, a class is 90 minutes, but the koma rate is appled at a per hour rate (so a 90 minute class would = 2 hours of pay).

I think most ALT jobs get the summer break off (around six weeks), and either full or partial pay for August. In my case I get 50%. There's another two-three weeks off in December/January, fully paid.

I got just over three weeks off between the end of term in March and starting again in April, but technically these days were between contracts and so not paid holiday. March and April are both calculated at a daily rate in the event of less than 15 days being worked (which was and will be the case for March and April respectively).

I'm contracted to work around 195 days this year. All public holidays are also paid days off.

Or closer to 3 weeks around my neck of the woods.
And not including national holidays, last academic year I had about a week and a half for Christmas and a little more than 2 weeks between contracts.

I think I might be getting spoilt with a full 4 weeks this summer though Laughing

I get 15 days off plus all national holidays and a few days at home on call

but then I don't do a full 40 hr week, I finish at 3;30 to 4;30 most days

so I am happy (plus get more than 27man every week of the year and insurances)

"1 man" = 10,000 yen
"27 man" = 270,000 yen

I think getting that much per week is a typo.

Wow, what do they have you doing?

I just checked the calendar and it's closer to 5 weeks in the summer this year. I may have to do some coaching for the interactive forum competition during the first part of the break, but I'll be able to take that time off later on.

We have classes until very late/end July and then are back at school in August just after Obon. I think it was 18th in 2009... can't remember last year's return date but it was about the same time.

This year I think I go back the 4th week of August hence why I might actually get a full 4 weeks.

If so, I'll be able to spend more than 10 days in the UK this year and actually attend my birthday party.

And, then there are the entrance exams (yes, more than one type) that some teachers are called upon to write, monitor, and correct; fortunately, those get a little extra money, but they eat up one's weekend.

This is true. I am a professor with Westgate and I've had to write, monitor and grade entrance exams at all 4 of my universities - including weekends! We usually end up having a 7 day work week at this time. Not fun. But still, I only have 20 classes a week which is a lot better than eikaiwa teachers, so I can't complain. As for holidays, I have to teach summer and winter intensive classes for those students that fail their regular semester classes or are attending for credit. It's fun, but we don't get the long vacations that the the Japanese professors get. I got 12 days last year 13 this year.

Westgate employees are Westgate employees, not university professors.
