I will be moving to Chongqing this summer to teach at a foreign language school. I have already signed a 1 year contract. The school has received the foreign experts permit and the invitation letter. I should be receiving them shortly to apply for a work visa.
However, the HR guy said that the foreign experts office has recently changed the rules so that anyone without 2 years teaching experience must have a TEFL or TESOL certificate. He said that I must have it before I apply for my residence permit.
I thought that the school hiring me would be the only people who cared if I had a TEFL or TESOL and since they have already hired me it shouldn't matter? When I go to get my residence permit will they check to see if I have a TEFL or TESOL?
If I do go ahead and get my TEFL or TESOL do you have recommendations for an online site that is best? Some sites offer 40 hour or 70 hour certificates. Does it matter how many hours my certificate is as long as I have one? |

All you need is a copy of a TEFL certificate with your name on it attached to your paperwork, so I'd take the cheapest online course I could find. A 40-hour training certificate will suffice as your friendly neighborhood PSB in China lacks the time or inclination to scrutinize such documents.
If you have the time and money I'd consider taking a 120-hour TEFL/TESOL certificate course in Zhuhai or some other resort destiantion before you start your new job.
Onsite training courses are better by far. |
