Hello,

I am a US citizen teaching in Hungary with a Hungarian VISA, work and residence permit.

Can these documents transfer or aid me in working in another EU country?

Thanks in advance

No. Not at all, unfortunately.

Each country issues work/living permits on an individual basis, unless you are an EU member citizen.

For example: I have permanent residency and all other docs in the Czech Rep (based on marraige to a Czech national). I can ONLY live/work in the Czech Rep with these.

Only actual citizenship helps one get jobs in other EU member countries.

Thanks for answering. I sent some emails to the consulates of the countries I'm interested in. I imagine I'll get a similar response:/

Thanks again.

If you stayed long enough in Hungary, you could get citizenship. Then that would help you.

Eight years of continuous legal residency are required, plus there is a constitutional test in Hungarian.

Gaining citizenship in a foreign country isn't really the best advice for someone who primarily wants to use it to work in other countries. One really needs to have a serious commitment to the country in which one is seeking the citizenship - this is nothing to be taken lightly.

The response from the Italian Consulate. At least I found the uppercase "NO" humorous Very Happy

"Dear Sir,

With regard to your question, the answer is NO. Please consult our Embassy
in Budapest for more information.
Cordially,

Lucia Pasqualini "

Well, darrenjzy, what do you think?

8 years of legal residency (maybe you've already got some of this behind you) and a constitutional test in Hungarian. Also considerations of income tax filing and probably some sort of pension and health care responsibilities.

Do you want to become Hungarian?

Is it worth it to you for the chance to apply for jobs in Italy sometime in the future?

Hmmm. . . in 8 years I could. . .what? Obtain a doctorate or three, and a handful of specialized quals? Change fields completely, if I so desired? Work on gaining citizenship in a country I didn't want to live in? And, assuming this were my plan, how would I predict just how the rules might change in the next 8 years? The newer EU member states are fairly rapidly changing the residency and work requirements for third country nationals. For example, less than a year ago Americans could live and work in Slovenia with relative ease. (Well. . .assuming they could find a job!) Now all the EU rules are being enforced, and new "Employment of Foreigners" legislation has been passed. Perhaps spending the next 8 years living in a country where you don't want to be is not the best plan for getting to Italy? Wink
