No, I'm just living in Glasgow - TEFL came up as an option because there are really no jobs here currently and just about everyone I attended university with is looking for a way out.
I actually find older Glaswegians hilarious and very nice. I used to room with a 78-year-old Glaswegian cabaret pianist who once said to me, 'I will never tell you what I did in Singapore'. It's people in their thirties or younger that I've had difficulty with. There is a culture of blaming everyone else for their problems and never having the ability to admit they are wrong, as well as being quite nasty in general with a 'polite' veneer. For example, someone who I thought was a very close friend had never actually liked me, and instead of telling me, she stopped speaking to me and then told another mutual friend that she had never really been friends with me. According to this friend, this type of behaviour is 'British politeness'. :/
In addition, I am really not overfond of the vomit all over the streets, the neds constantly harassing everyone, the National-Enquirer style obsession with celebrities, the desire for orange skin...it's just very dirty and a bit mindless and sad. Those who are looking for the beauty, grandeur, culture, history, etc of Scotland: Glasgow is not the place. The Highlands and islands are beautiful but there is no work to be had there. As for the cities, Trainspotting seems more and more like a documentary.
I do love the islands a lot. I wish there was work out there.
Just to mention, I have lived in other places and been very happy, so I'm not just grumpy all the time. |

I'm sorry to hear that, though I must say my Glasgow experience was minimal. I have only visited the city twice, and it was brief on both ends with my wife and I catching a cab from one station to another both times. Personally I found the cab drivers very refreshing (compared to the black cabs in London), and I do believe we did do a pub before leaving.
I agree though, there are more lovely places in Scotland, but as to work in those areas, I haven't a clue (having the wrong passport doesn't mean I'll be finding out soon either).
Good luck on finding something better (even if it means finding the inner beauty where you are),
