My No.1 advice would be to streamline your study by focussing purely on the assignments/assessment tasks and what they are asking. Many people will disagree with this approach, but I only ever focussed on the assignments and only gathered/read information directly related to the assignment questions. All other readings (such as weekly readings which are often issued) were disregarded. If they are of interest you can always come back to them another time once your course is out of the way.

I think that if you want to remain teaching in universities for a long time it will be worth it. Most universities in Taiwan now require a PhD for new English teaching jobs. I think this will become a trend around the world. In the UK it used to be possible to get a university job without a PhD. Now that would be hard.

For someone of 50, I think it's not worth it, but for someone in their 20's or 30's it could be useful - if you want a career teaching English at universities.
