I have been through the pages and have read nothing good about either of these schools. However, I have been offered a contract with EF in Liaocheng. I also did not like the 40 hours a week and so I requested a change of wording in there 20 hours and some other stuff. I was informed that they would do this and send me another contract. Would this be a better deal or should one still stay away? As far as Sichuan Ruide, I actually telephoned the contact person, and he seemed genuine. Trying to make a decision. Confused

There are currently more than 6,000 EFL positions open in China.

Why do you insist on choosing the lesser of two evils?

What you must keep in mind when making a decision is that a contract written and entered into on Chinese soil is not the same as the kind of contract you are used to in the west.

The wording of the contract stating work hours may be changed to placate you and get you to sign. However even though the contract says one thing, the reality of when you start to work will be different. EF will still have you work 40 or more hours a week, and will be able to point at the contract wording to prove that you agreed to do so. The franchise will do this by saying such things as: lesson planning is not teaching time and is not scheduled as time worked; demo lessons are not teaching time and also not time worked; interviewing students for placement is not teaching time and is also not counted as time worked. Get the idea. Unless you want a bumpy ride arguing with the franchise all the time, I'd suggest you avoid EF.

EF only considers contact teaching hours in the classroom with students as time worked. Travelling time to outside schools is not teaching time and you don't get paid for it.

A reminder: Western contracts are enforceable in a system where rule of law applies. This is China; the rule of law is more flexible than you are use to. What legal recourse exists in the west when an employer breaches a contract is not available to you here.

Good luck

Stay away from EF!!!! Just say no! To those folks you are a body for which they get a commission--a piece of meat for which they will not take any responsibility, as the local schools are not owned by EF. Masochism is not the path to wisdom.

Hi Dancingdeb58,

I've just finished working in Sichuan. I had a contract with Ruide. Having read a lot of postings on this site, I believe the school I worked at was a decent one. Ruide has contracts with many schools.

The students were great, the photocopier woman sometimes a little slow, the teachers - some friendly, some not, the apartment very nice, etc

I had to leave for personal reasons and Ruide honoured my contract and gave me half the airfare and travel allowance.

I had no major problems with them or the school I worked for.

My advice is that it's important to think long and hard about working in China. There are so many things to get used to - the food (especially hot in Sichuan), different mentality of the people and higher pollution levels than in the west.

Hope this helps.

Dear Dancing Deb

EF make you work long hours and they also send you to local schools, which can mean a lot of travel, so it is too much like HARD WORK in my book.

I only teach 10 hours per week, live on campus and life could not be any better.

As I am 57 now, this really suits me.

Check out some other Schools : try

www.bogglesworld.com

for a start. You should shop around and get something with shorter hours and, if you are experienced, with reasonable money.

I forgot to mention that I am only on 3,500 rmb per month, but I am happy with that and will probably sign the next 12 months at the same amount.

Best of luck
