Hi all -
I know it's been asked before as to what's out there but I'm looking for the latest info on options or at least to be pointed in the right direction to look. I would like to look into getting my MA in TESL. Here is what I am looking for:
-Has to be online preferably from a US institution so there will be no recognition issues later
-Has to be online because I can't quit work and go into major debt to go somewhere to do it-no bricks and mortar
-Has to be acceptable for additional endorsement on teacher cert (which if it's an MA should not be an issue)-Student teaching if required I'll have to see about counting x hours on my current TEFL job in Moscow.
-Looking for the cheapest option-not in the budget for a 30K/yr program unless they what to give me a grant!
Thanks! |

First thing you probably want to do is look for masters degrees in TESOL (or Applied Linguistics) as opposed to TESL.
Have you looked at American Military University's Master of Teaching? You can do a master of education concentrating on working with English language learners {Other universities might call that an M.Ed(TESOL) degree}. |

Will your current employer help pay for it?
US ones aren't that cheap. NZ and Australian ones are cheaper. What about Framingham? They're from the US and aren't that expensive. |

Fat chance- one of the cheapest of all cheapskates I've ever come across! What is Framingham? The million dollar question is whether the NZ or Australian ones would be recognized in the US.Eval agencies are getting to be real sticklers as of late if you check out my post on renewing a teacher cert when overseas. I'd do it via U Alaska Fairbanks if they had a full program because they are on top of distance learning and not expensive at all. |

Framinham is a state uni, here's their link

Email them and ask, I KNOW they have distance programmes, they usually meet once or twice a year in different countries around the world.
Another way to cut costs is to ask about transfer credits. More and more will accept credits from TEFL certs and diploma, work experience, or past MA study. Never hurts to ask. It cut my second MA costs in half. And I finished in half the time. |

Hey, that's where my sister got her degree - about fifty years ago. It used to be called Framingham StateTeachers College.

Wow! I think the name is similiar, though they might not just be a teaching college anymore. Did your sister think it was a good programme? |

Dear naturegirl321,
Oh, it's the same place:
"Timeline of name changes
The school has had several names in the past:
1839 opened as the Normal School;
1845 designated State Normal School;
1932 became State Teacher's College at Framingham';
1960 became State College at Framingham; and
1968 became Framingham State College;
2010 became Framingham State University."
My sister loved it back then - she got her BS degree in dietetics (NOT in dianetics, ) and has been working in that field ever since. She's STILL working (part-time) at the age of 75.
Regards,
John |

I am considering doing the MA in TESOL offered by Victoria University in Wellington New Zealand. It looks pretty good and it is not expensive. Send them an email and ask about accreditation. It is one of the top 5 universities in New Zealand so I don't think there would be a problem.
