Unless you're hung up on the name DELTA, have you considered the Trinity Diploma in TESOL? This can be taken in distance learning mode, where you only need to find an examination centre for the written exam and to go to the host college's campus for a two week practical session. Cheaper than the 'live' courses but longer in duration.

I've recently been looking into doing either the DELTA or the Trinity Diploma. The latter looks like a more practical option for me. Do they carry equal weight with employers or is one seen as superior to the other?

The Trinity Dip is equivalent to the DELTA and is cheaper, at least in the distance mode. I thought expense was something you wanted factored in. So sorry; all that money you didn't pay me.

I am working towards possibly trying to break into teaching at an oil company in the future. Most of the posts I have seen for good companies in Kazakhstan want a DELTA, at least in the specific region I may someday live since my wife works there. Is it truly viewed as equivalent? I know that in Module 2 of the DELTA you can specialize, for example Oil and Gas English, I have only done minimal research on the Trinity but at first glance I did not see this component in it.

I read through the info on the Trinity Diploma after seeing your post and it does indeed look more attractive for my situation.

Thanks,

KP

Although DELTA is the default name asked for, the Trinity Dip is definitely seen as equivalent in terms of level. HOWEVER, your point about the curriculum is very important. If one course offers something specific that you might want, then that is something else in its favour.

Thank you. Confirmation that they have equal standing is helpful.

Sorry to bring up an old post, but it's a long weekend. The Distance Delta appears to be cheaper, but you still have to travel for the two week orientation course.

With the Distance Trinity Diploma you also have to travel for 2 to 4 weeks. I'm looking at the one through St. George's in London. Yes, London is expensive, but it's only two weeks, versus the 4 week one I was looking at in Barcelona. I'm hoping to start next summer and then complete it in summer 2013.

The problem that I've run into with the delta is that it's very British Council run. So often if you're not a BC teacher, you can't do the course at their centre. At least that was my experience when I called the local BC earlier this year.

I think the cost difference is small. At least the Distance Delta compared with the Distance trinity. I think the Trinity one was a couple hundred less. I'd still have to travel.

One thing that annoyed me is that I'd go to the country BC website and there'd be no info about the DELTA module. YOu'd do a search and other country BC websites would come up. With Trinity it's more straight forward.

When are you thinking of doing yours? St George's is the cheapest since you only have to go for 2 weeks. It takes longer distance wise than Oxford TEFL (not to be confused with Oxford Seminars) in Barcelona, which is a month, but only 6 months distance.

I am just finishing off my DipTESOL through St Georges. Exam in Aug, then travel to London in Oct for 2 weeks. Therefore, if I finish it in Oct it will have taken me 19 months. In that time I have also become a father and written a travel guidebook as well as held down a full time teaching job. It would be possible to do in a year if one pushed it. I have found the course useful. However, on top of course fees are the expensive books, exam fees and a fortnight in London. In total I estimate it will cost 2.5 - 3k pounds.
