|

Ok guys help me out here! I got the following job offers, all at unis and all around the same kind of salary and deal ie flight, apartment on campus etc etc.I am married, not looking for night life, looking to meet people and get to know China. I hate the cold, hubby hates the heat.we both love the city.
We got offers from Zheijiang,Hangzhou,Dalian,Qingdao,Mianyang near Chengdu,Kunming (no apartment but rent money),Ningbo,Changzhou and Nanjing.
Which place should we pick? I know that Dalian and Qingdao are cold in winter but people have told me they have heating in winter where maybe Nanjing and Chengdu don't. any suggestions?
sorry for the long post. |

what part of kunming? how much rent money? can you afford three
months rent plus one month deposit plus one month agency fee when
you sign a contract?
just as a baseline, plan for about 2000/month rent for a modern, furnished
apartment. you can find cheaper if you have the time, but will you have
a month or so to view apartments? where will you stay and on whom's
tab while you're searching? is your fao willing to accompany you
to question the agent/landlord and to sign the contract? will the fao help
you set up phone/cable/electric/water/gas?
you'll also need several thousand to set up the apartment, even if furnished.
towels, sheets, cleaning stuff, toothbrush rack, cooking supplies, etc. little
stuff, maybe, but it'll add up quickly. |

It's Yunnan Normal. They offer 1200 rent allowance. We have savings (we are coming as early retired couple) Hope to arrive in August so will have a month free before starting.Know quite a few people in KM who could help I suppose. Are you trying to put me off KM,Choudoufu? |

no, not trying to put you off. just want you to be prepared.
kunming ain't as cheap as it once was. if you come prepared
for a major expense at contract signing, no problems.
if you arrive with $100 in travellers' checques, well......
i'm not familiar with rents in that area (Shangyuan Road, Wuhua, Kunming),
but i doubt 1200 will fully cover rent and utilities. maybe, but not
likely, so prepare to pay out a bit extra per month.
you could place an apartment wanted ad in gokunming if you
decide on this city. sadly, i won't be here. leaving kunming to
teach engrish in/on hainan. |

Piglet,
Mianyang is quite a pleasant sort of town.I was teaching there about 5 years ago. I don't recall if it ever got v.cold during winter - don't think it did, though ! BTW, what is the name of the uni in Mianyang ?
You also mentioned Zhejiang Province . Have you been offered jobs only in Hangzhou, or other places as well ? I have spent a total of 6 years in Zhejiang, but have not worked in Hangzhou.Just be aware that the cost of living is quite high there; although not as high as in nearby Shanghai. But many everyday items might well be more expensive than in smaller cities within that province. Also, as touched on in other posts, many Hangzhou unis are actually a long way from the city.
Nanjing is a nice place, but have been told that during summer it can be pretty unbearable (humidity).

thanks all.Sojourner I have several offers from Hangzhou (I am so talented you see
One is outside of hangzhou proper and I have a couple of first hand raving reviews for it, and one in Hangzhou (zheijiang shuren).
I also have another for ZSTU but I heard some bad stuff so I am not so keen on that one. |
