Rent in Dubai is very expensive but that should be included in a contract.

From my experience food and household products are much cheaper in the UAE than in my small Omani town. The Safeer Supermarket in my town charges more than Carrefour in Al Ain (Carrefour prices are the same all over the gulf).

Waitrose (U.A.E) is cheaper than Al Fair (Oman) for foreign products and pork is about a third of the price it is sold at in Oman.

Hotel accomodation is much cheaper in Dubai than Muscat by a long shot!

However, gas is more expensive in the UAE so we fill up on the Oman side. Taxis in the U.A.E are also way more expensive because they are metered.

And lets not forget electricity and water! In Oman we pay OR5 or OR10 a month but people on the UAE side pay rates you would pay in first world countries.

Keep in mind that even with all this teachers in the UAE get paid $1500 - $2000 more so they still come out on top financially.

Good points, and your points mirror my thoughts all along!

Shopping (imported goods) is more expensive in Oman than the UAE, especially the pork products...who can afford those prices, certainly not a humble tefler who wants to save!!!

Agree the hotels are cheaper than Muscat too, Muscat was recently outed as having the highest hotel costs in the world, even more than Moscow, in fact.

About gas (petrol?) I don't drive, so wouldn't know. I would argue however the taxis work out better, because at least you only pay what's on the meter, rather than arguing with some bedu guy how much from the hotel to the airport in muscat...

Just gotta smile about one of the points you guys are making Smile

If you live in Oman, would you stay in a hotel in Oman? Only very occasionally I'm guessing.
You are more likely to stay in a hotel in the UAE, when you go over for a weekend or a week or whatever.
Ergo, cheap hotels in the UAE are a bonus if you are working in Oman Smile

I agree with you about pork prices, jeez, I can't afford it here. I wait till I go to the UAE, buy frozen from Choithrams and pack it in ice in a big chilly bin.

Petrol is more expensive in the UAE by about 30%, confirmed, and yes, it's this haggling thing, and the poor state of the taxis in Oman makes them unattractive. By comparison the UAE taxis are all clean and metered, which saves a lot of hassle all round.

Exactly. Some of them are like minivan kind of things, really clean and comfortable, and with good working A/C. Plus the drivers are generally knowledgeable and speak english well.

AND...sometimes you can find a driver who will assist you in any way he can. I had one I could call anytime, and he would show up or arrange for one of his colleagues to do so. Very nice! Very Happy

Can you make such an arrangement in Oman?

It is the luck of finding someone dependable. I know people who have done it in Muscat. I don't know if this is something that is easier or harder in the small village. Cool

VS it is your right to accuse me. It is also my right to disagree.

I would take a metered taxi over an unmetered one any day.

Ever had a fight at muscat airport with a taxi driver over the fare? I have.

Ever had a fight with a driver in Seeb near the airport? I have.

One shouldn't have to haggle with a driver. It is unseemly...meters, the way forward, no excuses!~

While I think this back and forth is completly off topic, I have to agree with Urban. A metered one is always better. From Seeb airport to Golden Tulip. Not even 1km from airport, but 8 rials.

Dead on,especially when petrol is so cheap, it is outrageous to make such a demand of a passenger. I think meters are left out purposefully, I refuse to take taxis, and if they do change the price/cheat me I call the police as it is robbery, when it is cut and diced...

Why fight? It's an age old technique that humans have developed and utilize to this day....it's called negotiating and often works in your favor!

But if your just feeling entitled and put off by foreign cultures, then best to stay in your home country where it is safe and predictable.

It's not about being put off by foreign cultures, it's about being treated fairly and not being cheated. Taxi's in Dubai are metered...so why not Muscat. They are after all trying to attract foreigners like dubai AKA the wave, and so on...is it not unreasonable therefore to expect the simple task of a gps and a meter in a taxi?

Sorry but again your comment is the garbage here. This is not a disagreement based on your experience. It is an insult based on ignorance.

Yes, it can be done. Yes, it is done in Muscat. I personally know teachers who have done it and since they don't drive are very likely still doing it.

The fact that you prefer Dubai is your opinion. I'd take Muscat over Dubai any day. That is my opinion. The difference is that I will not insult you or any other poster who prefers it.
