Hi gang.

I just got a job show up in my email for this lot.

Has anyone heard of them, or better yet, had personal experience with either (IIRC, KSU shows up a lot, and in not good terms - yes??).

But a search for ICEAT got me nothing.... Sad

(yeah, I know, nothing means maybe ok... cos ppl prefer to bitch than to post good stuff!)

A positive point is that the advert specifies medical students who were "the best of a bad bunch" a while back. They actually had some study skills, were a bit keener and I found them overall more receptive than the others.

This is only a snap shot and I wouldn't bet on just getting the medical students if you were employed.

ICEAT is the umbrella company of ICEEL. ICEEL was hiring for KSU last year and I believe the medical students they are referring to are the KSU medical sciences branch. So I would have to say that ICEAT by association is a good company to work for. As a contractor they are pretty good with their staff. They have other gigs in Jubail and Immam Muhammed too.

Regards

Grendal

ps. I'm using my vpn to get on this site as I am still in Saudi right now.

ICEAT (former ICEEL) have contracts with the naval base in Jubail. They had a contract last year and I presume it's still the same one.

Watch out for a language centre opening up soon with this gig....

We are pleased to inform you that after a recent performance evaluation with King Saud Universitys Preparatory Year Deanship, ICEAT will be renewing your contract for the next academic year 2011/2012. ICEAT will notify you by email regarding the date and time that you may visit the office to review the details of the contract and to sign the relevant documents before the start of the new academic year.

This should prove that I'm not a manager at ICEAT. Wish I were though. A manager wouldn't get this lowly email reserved only for ESL jarheads like us.

You be the judge. ICEAT & Educatioal Experts are currently trying to fill void created by KSU and Obeikan on the KSU project. Their offers are no better than Obeikan. Both companies have cut the benefits significantly and pocketing the difference for themselves. The ICEAT offer is slightly higher for housing (x3 monthly salary/12) and transportation (1000 SAR). Educational Experts housing "up to" 2750 SAR and "up to" 600 SAR. You be the judge.

Here is my response to some questions I was recently asked by someone privately:

My best general advice is to read through the threads and read between the lines. It's not that bad, but it's that bad, if you know what I mean, which you won't if you haven't worked in that environment before. LOL.

On to your specific questions:

Q. I have deduced from various posts that direct hire is best without doubt but then some recruiters are better than others while the majority suck. How would you see ICEAT for a newbie?

ICEAT are crappy, sucky recruiters. They offer less than Bell did. I wouldn't trust them at all. Direct hire is better, but you'll be more closely scrutinized. I'd say, if you need the money, ICEAT may be okay for you, BUT LOWER YOUR EXPECTATIONS RIGHT NOW.

Q. Do they let you keep your passport? How about multiple entry visas?

I didn't work for ICEAT, but at some point your passport will disappear into the back office. You'll get a Saudi ID card. Senior managers and people with pull do not have to follow this humiliating and controlling protocol. I avoided it for a while, but was finally brought to heel. Is it a problem? Only in principle. After a while in Saudi, you won't have any principles left, so try not to worry about it too much; just remember you're in prison and will be let out now and again if you behave yourself. (All the above assumes you are offered a working visa. Do not consider being employed unofficially, i.e. on a business visa.)

Q. Is the housing on a compound? Would you consider it as safe and decent?

I think I went to one "compound" that some ICEAT staff were housed at. It reminded me of the Japanese Prisoner of War camp in J.G. Ballard's novel Empire of the Sun. The most shocking thing about it was the way the "teachers" there lived with no respect form the place. I guess they got fed up of it. The compound was safe however--a bunch of terrorists would never bother with the place. Bottom line: take the housing allowance if possible (1/3 of monthly salary.)

Q. Do they give you the week or so off during Eid al Adha and another week end of semester?

I left the programme last year, so I'm not sure what the deal is regarding holidays, but my understanding is that you'll get a week around the Hajji and that's kind of it. This is KSU. It's no longer the place to be, if it ever was...

Not true. Bell offered less and direct hire doesn't always pay as much as contractors do.

Try to get advice on ICEAT from someone who actually worked for them, that way you get a more well informed view.

@Al-Mansoor: Okay, let's see what other people have to say... I should point out that although I did not work for ICEAT, I knew a lot of people who did, and this was why I replied as I did. If ICEAT are in fact good employers, I'd be the first to congratulate you.

Yes they are good employers. As good as it will get. "This is as good as it gets" when it comes to contractors that have just started in the educational business. I think I am qualified enough to attest to to this, since I've been accused of being a manager there.

Grendal

ps. but if you are expecting a western style employers then it's better to stay in the west for that.

Passports do not "disappear into the back office". The foreigners ignorantly trade them for iquamas. Really this is the topic for another thread. The employer has no legal right to hold anyone's passport. In fact, the employee has the legal right to keep it under Saudi and International law. However, for those who foolishly give the passports which they bear to their employers, there is no effective legal remedy without the active participation of the government which in fact owns the passport.

The trick here is that the bearer does not own the passport he/she bears. It is the property of the government which has issued it. (See Bobby Fischer's experience exiting Japan a few years ago.) If the employer demands a passport, the best trick is to tell them that consulate is holding it since it is their property. (You can even mail it to the consulate for safe holding.) Tell them they should contact the consulate if they want to hold it, and remove yourself from the middle of the problem. If some serious conditions occur, natural disaster, war, civil unrest, etc., it is not wise to be dependent on a local employer who may want to keep you in the country despite the fact that the King has granted an exit visa.
