Stay away from this place. You will get shafted in any way they can, even violating the contract. This goes way beyond the normal BS. |

Oh please. Not one detail. How can you expect anyone to take this claim seriously? Just disgruntled? And has anyone ever heard of "gruntled?" |

You lack faith in the essential goodness of the white man's culture.

It's a nice gesture to warn others, but as others have said details need to be provided. How did they shaft you?
Just saying that McDonald's tastes like garbage is an opinion. To others, it's a feast fit for kings. |

Friends, country men, fellow professionals hear my words and mark them well.
Do you actually think that the powers that be within your school do not know about Dave's ESL Cafe? I have personally seen my FAO searching Dave's. The Chinese people are not dumb, they may act that way and I will tell you why shortly, they are sneaky, underhanded and they will get you any way they can, if they choose to.
One of the defining aspects of a communist state is censorship and control. Since foreigners cannot be controlled as easily as the general populace in China, they use other tactics to achieve the same result, these being mostly, but not limited to misdirection, denial, and counter posting. Think about it for a minute, and then have a look at the posts on Dave's. You will see the misdirection, changing the subject to attack the poster. You will see the counter posting, where they say the place is great, come work here, best time of my life. All of you have personally heard the denial and apologizing right to your faces.
Why do I not want to give more information? I shouldn't have to. Who knows why it is they are asking in the first place, to misdirect, to properly counter post, most likely.
Do not be naive; take the word of a fellow countryman, and professional for what it is, and at face value. Then decide for yourself, whether you want to work there or not. |

Do you actually think that we are so naive?
Especially when you consider that many of the schools and agents use Dave's to advertise. |

Apparently so, you all seem to lack the subtlety needed to know what is and is not genuine. Just asking the questions you have, say that. Don't take it personally Mike, just keep your eyes open and your head down. |

My lack of subtlety is the first thing people notice about me. |

It is normally ill-advised to go making sweeping generalisations like you have here, that we ALL lack the required subtlety.
Considering I have been here for 16 years, and taught at middle school. high school, private college, university, private company, and have spent the last +5 years in a state-owned company, that I think by now I have a pretty good idea what questions need to be asked and when, and that I can hold my head high.
And I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one in a similar situation.
But I do agree, that there are SOME people who seemingly come to China very naive in their expectations, and they should definitely heed your advice. |

If I may ask Mike. Why were you so easily swayed from the topic at hand. Bothering to post about McDonalds and muddle the thread? You bit on the misdirection that occurs in these posts, hook line and sinker. Possibly that is your job? I would also like to thank you for the resume. People say a lot of things, but what can you really prove? |

The point I am making is simple. We must look out for each other, post politely and not negatively. Offer advice based on our experience to others, and not muddle up posts designed to do just that. |

It's always good to warn fellow teachers of potential problems. But without specifics, it's hard to swallow.
Did they spank your bum, or merely flick their finger at your toe?
What I mean is: Did they cheat you, and if so, how so?
Did they honour their contract? If not, how so?
We need to know why we should not work there, not just a general do not work there kind of line. |

I am with you on this - if you go into to detail about your situation, the school is going to know exactly who you are.
I would do the same thing - post a warning to help others, and follow up with the details when you are safely out of the clutches of this employer. |
