Dear All,

I am a CELTA qualified English teacher currently living and working in Berlin. I have nearly 2 years post-qualification experience teaching adults, teenagers and children.

I am currently thinking of making the jump to Hong Kong and would like to know what my chances are and where the best places are to look for work. I have heard about the NET scheme, what about other schools or websites that may be useful in the hunt???

Thanks a lot,

daniel

Do you also have a B.Ed or PGDE? If you do, you will be well ahead of the pack in the hunt for jobs. Am assuming you have at least a Bachelor of Something as well as CELTA: without a degree it is well-nigh impossible to get a working visa to teach in HK.

If you have non-teaching degree + CELTA, then as I understand it, you can still apply for the NET scheme, but if accepted would have to agree to studying for PGDE while teaching (someone more au fait with the scheme can either correct me or add more detail).
Otherwise you are most likely looking at smaller private or Direct Subsidy schools, or language centres/ cram schools

Most international schools, and the ESF, like to employ teachers who are qualified in doing either general classroom teaching (primary schools) or specific subjects (high schools), and have experience teaching native (standard) English speaking students.

scmp.com 's classifieds and jobsdb.com are good places to start looking at what's available.
