Ok so here's the stupid thing I did. a friend told me it would be ok.I couldn't decide between two jobs so I signed 2 contracts. One invitation letter arrived (the place I don't want).The other place has not yet sent me the letter,it is supposed to arrive in the next week.Have to go and get the visa done etc. Are they going to know that 2 different places have issued me an invitation letter? I know it was dumb but an experienced person advised me to do that.
am I going to screw up here??  |

great thanks a million ,yes they are very far apart... phew.I assumed so but now I am waiting for the second invitation letter to arrive I suddenly got a panic attack!

Yes, at least they know. Because we must protect all Chinese schools and all Chinese recruiters. They are more important than the teachers.
It is nice to tell them; you did not need to tell them, just as they need not tell you that they found another foreigner for a much reduced salary.
But very nice to do so. |

I stood in a line at a train station in China for an hour once, I could have halved the time I was there if I had pushed my way to the front like everyone else, but I didn't. Chinese standards of FT treatment will never improve if simply reinforce the notion that we are barbarians.
If I was a Chinese FAO I wouldn't like to deal with some of the FTs that have crawled across my path. |

I beg to differ - the barbarians are the Chinese.
The above is a perfect example of common, polite manners.
I wrote about it before, but will briefly do so again here because it shows how the FAO's need to learn the proper way to do business.
I was verbally offered a job in April by someone in the Foreign Languages Dept. of a university. In May I was officially offered the job by the FAO. After more than 2 weeks of exchanging emails requesting/sending documents needed to apply for a new Residence Permit for yours truly, I didn't hear from the FAO the next day acknowledging receipt of the document, as usual. Up until that point the FAO had sent an email the next day.
I waited a couple of days, thinking that she may be busy, before I sent an email asking if she had received my previous email. The following night, after 5pm, the FAO sent me an email rescinding the job offer.
In my opinion, if I hadn't inquired I seriously doubt the FAO would have informed me of their decision.
So much for good business practices in China. The train story above reeks of Barbarianism.
Similar shit happened to me waiting in line to check-in to my United flight home. The line moved about 5 feet forward while I was preoccupied. The "lady" behind me started to push me aside so she could get ahead of me on line!! This was in the HK airport. HK people are civilized. The lady was part of a group from GZ.
It's funny, even the taxi driver who took me to the HK airport said the mainlanders lacked manners.
*****Sidenote - I'm not advocating that the FAO's acknowledge via email all messages sent to them applying for a job. But, once a position has been offered a job then they should respond to emails and more importantly inform the prospective employee of offer rescission.*** |

I think this defines your view.
Signing two contracts is alright, as they aren't the real contracts. They are the contracts the school uses to get the invitation letter. You are a bit mean to get them shelling out money to send contracts and send letters if you never intended to work for them. That is life though.
Others post things like, but one Chinese person screwed me once so it is ok to screw them all. A person with no morals feels this way. It is good you let them know. |

It has nothing to do with protecting a school. It's simply a common courtesy to inform them you won't be coming after they've initiated the paperwork to hire you. Some people still practice small courtesies like this these days. |

Yes, because we all know that schools in China are famous for doing the paperwork early and there is no rushing around at the last minute.
Come on, any actual advice that is helpful to teachers? |
