Hello,

I just finished the phone interview portion, before an in-person interview -- for a full-time SAT teaching position put out by StudyWorks, a company that says they are working the Chinese government.

The salary seem generous enough -- the work hours seem pretty demanding, knowing from previous SAT instruction.

Does anyone have any experience with this company, or know whether there are even better salaries available for experience SAT instructors who are also certified high school math teachers in the US?

SAT PREP TEACHING IN CHINA OVERVIEW:

Our SAT professors will work in state-of-the-art high schools and boarding schools in major metropolitian cities in China. Teaching assignments last 8 months. You will be working 40 hours per week, 30 teaching hours and 10 office hours. As a Studyworks professor, you will educate students on the Critical Reading and Writing portions of the SAT. Paid SAT prep training is provided.

Requirements: B.A. degree (Masters degree or higher preferred), At least one year teaching experience. Ability to live overseas 8 months or longer. While not required, ESL instruction and knowledge of Mandarin a plus.

Salary: $4000/month + health insurance while in China (8-month contract required). In most instances Studyworks will provide adult, on-campus housing. Round-trip airfare is included . Training will begin in August, teaching starts in September.

That salary is not generous; in fact it's terrible for the hours expected. It should be 4k a week for this position. "In most instances" housing is provided. Maybe not in your instance. You'll work in high schools and boarding schools; perhaps in many on the same day. Training is provided, but is it paid?

This offer is not worthy of consideration.

It's $4000/month US before taxes -- paid in United States company.

I have a video interview coming up this week, and I mean to ask if I can get a stipend for living off campus -- I've read on here that discussion, and I'd prefer living off campus, I believe.

The beneifts look pretty good for a job that has minimal requirements. I'd consider something like that if I had the chance.

I bet SAT is more difficult to teach to the locals than ACT. Youngsters here are brought up by memorizing parts of books and tests, but their logic is often nonexistant.
I'd say that above is well deserved money.

Yikes. 30 hours a week is pretty demanding. But, you'll save a good deal of money, it would be very easy to put 3k away each month.

It's nice to have that much pay guaranteed in the contract, but:
(a) it's only an 8 month contract. Where will you live the other four months?
(b) the pay only comes out to ~�200/hour (discounting office hours). You could teach fewer hours at a university and simply freelance as an SAT tutor and earn more. When you consider how much the students pay, you really aren't earning that much.

Good point regarding how much they pay.. hadn't looked at that pay rate yet. I am still resentful supremely at the Mercedes driving Chinese I taught in the US for less money.
