|

Can anyone give me an insight as to if a vpn (i.e 12vpn) will work in an apartment on a school campus using the internet provided by the school. 12vpn believe it will be blocked by the school 'wall'. Anyone have any experioence in this matter please.
Also could we feasibly pay to get our own internet (wireless/cable) brought in or do the schools baulk at this (and can you physically do it? i.e. is wireless readily available in China)
Any help appreciated, we move ther in 5 days and am trying to get a head start. |

I use a different VPN but had the same issue - it couldn't connect through the school's system. The VPN provider was very helpful and told me to use one of their L2TP gateways when connecting on campus, that the standard PPPT connection often can't tunnel out through campus networks. That did the trick. I was just on another campus in another city for a month and had the same problem. Same solution-used the L2TP connection.
Not sure if 12vpn offers an L2TP connection but if so, that might solve your problem. |

Hope this is helpful.
Schools that use a network AND are watched more carefully by TPTMB (The Powers That May Be) are harder.
I strongly suggest using a proxy within a proxy. Like, using a VPN and then using a browser-based proxy after.
Not technically savvy at all, but they work for me and my mates. |

Just ask your school if you can arrange your own connection. I doubt they will care too much if you pay for it and organise it all. If they say no then you can look at other options.

Wouldn't that slow everything down even more? Why even go to the trouble? I'm sure the government has better things to do than hunting down foreigners who look at naughty websites. |

Yes, it would slow things down.
But if given the choice between being able to connect with my family and friends back at home slowly... or not at all....
Read ALL the news slowly.... or only some news that is selected for my eyes by The Powers That Be...
Just an option. |

It took a while for the university here to crack and allow FTs to get private lines. They were trying to claim that the wiring wasn't there, I called bs. Also added in that sharing the same network with everyone on campus made it difficult to find and prepare quality material for class. It was part of my contract renewal negotiations. Sad that it took a year, but it is much easier to convince people when you have built a reputation.
I have never tried to run my vpn through the school network. I am pretty sure it would work, but not positive. You can also get wireless in most medium-large cities. Haven't done it, but have heard mixed reviews. If you did that the vpn would certainly work as long as the IP wasn't blocked. Usually you can talk to the vpn company and they can give you a list of IPs that work in China. |
