Bit of a lengthy topic header. My work permit runs out in a couple of months or so, and I'm deciding whether or not to stay with the same employer or perhaps look for pastures a-new.
The draw for my current employer is that they can get me a work permit.
So, what are the benefits of a work permit?
Me first:
A work permit holder... doesn't need to worry about Visa renewals. (duh!) |

True, the far majority of the time.
You still have to renew your visa.
And 2 friends of mine living in Saigon with valid work permits sent in their visas for renewal with all of the appropriate documents, and only got 3 months visas. |

I had work permits AND a 5 year multi entry spouse visa-BUT I still was required to get (and pay for) visas regularly.
In fact, once with a WP AND 5 year muoltiple entry spuse visa, I attempted to leave Vietnam for a short holiday, and was refused exit, because i did not have a current valid viusa to be in Vietnam. Go figger! |

| You can get a 2-year temp residence with a WP. Mine says "bearer doesn't need a visa." It's a lovely little card you put in your passport. Never had a problem going in, out, and around the country, getting official documents... anything. |

Some pretty bad stories here guys. I've got a residency card and work permit so I am set, but, for some knuckle-headed reason, I've heard that it is damn-near impossible for foreigners to get a residency card up in Hanoi . Indeed, I can think of no explanation (except, of course, to make money on visa renewals and to create work for bureacrats) as to why the 'right to work' and the 'right to reside' should not be covered under the same visa. It's just ridiculous! |

I too am really quite surprised that people with Work Permits have had issues with Visas - I thought that was the whole point?!
Anyway, I suppose the point of starting this thread was to access the true value of a work permit and to find out what else it can be used for / what additional privileges one is party to as a work permit holder.
Anything?
And any news of non work permit holders being deported since the new decree came into play at the start of this month?

Thanks. |

These are GREAT for a laff.
They (The Powers That Be) put these things out about once every ten to twelve months in an attempt to let ole round-eyes know his place. It's supposed to have the Tay shaking in their boots.....
Personally?? I have NEVER heard of anybody that I know OR that my friends knew ever being deported outta Viet Nam......for ANY reason.....hell - a couple of them had EXPIRED PASSPORTS AND NO ACTUAL VISA!!! So, yeah - these things that Immigration Viet Nam cranks out once a year or so.....you're supposed to show the reverent fear of them by ooooh-ing and ahhh-ing when you see these decrees, then they see that, are pleased that you are fearful of them, and then they leave you alone and go back to collecting bribes!! |
