my wife spoke with the Apple Ipad2 help desk for an ipad problem and in the course of the convesration was told that there is no wi-fi in China as it is banned and Ipad's are only useable through downloading apps through your computer based istore.

is this total rubbish??? i seem to think this person doesnt know what they are talking about.

what's the score, any insights appreciated.

we have bought the airport (ethernet converter to wifi) to use in our apartment and are wondering if we should have bothered.

Some would be pulling your wife's plonker if she had one. The only real restrictions are some websites of the social networking type, facebook, youtube, twitter etc.

They have wi-fi in Starbucks for crying out loud. Just another person who's afraid to say "I don't know".

Let's keep in mind that banning/censoring on mainland China may not have to do with the central government but with some local ones too. Perhaps these questions should be asked; Where are you OP? Is anyone else on forums in the same location? So, let's not cry out loud yet, shall we?

You forgot to mention many blog sites, some news sites and/or articles, certain Wikipedia articles, some forums....

The Internet in China is not only blocked, it is also filtered.

Wi-Fi exists even in the small city I am in in some cities, but you need a password and often need to show your ID card/passport so they can record it.

I have a wi-fi in my bedroom your wife can use.

harhar.

No really. A wi-fi box can be purchased for your lan-line internet for about 150 rmb in any computer store, I use it for my labtop, PSP and mobile all the time.

"...there is no wi-fi in China as it is banned and Ipad's are only useable through downloading apps through your computer based istore. "

Wrong. I'm in a second tier (possibly third tier) city in Jiangsu. I can go to the donut shop and use its wi-fi. Cafes here have wi-fi. I know several Chinese who have wi-fi in their homes. I can buy a wi-fi rig in the computer bazaar and in the electronics stores. Pizza Hut has wi-fi.
