I am surprised that you folks don't know or couldn't figure out what AIESEC is - especially the Americans among us.

It is an organization run by and for recent grads to get experience and utilize that youthful energy for a variety of causes. It is kind of like a cross between the peace corps, Fulbright, junior MBA program and Up with People! for their exuberance which often annoys us older curmudgeons!

They do things like go to Uganda and deliver courses on water, sex ed and cultural understanding.

So it is not a real job offer, at least for old pros like us. It is meant for soon-to-be or very recent grads. It is a huge network and probably helps enormously for those keeners getting into the corporate world.

I hadn't heard of it, but the website cleared up what it is. I think that AMIDEAST should have made their advertisement clearer.

Exactly. Their ad appeared to represent a standard teaching job--except fot the lousy salary package, of course.

I agree that with the cost of living rising in Oman that 700 OMR is pushing it a bit....But let's not forget what a local Omani would be paid for a similar position....I believe this figure is approximately what most teachers in the secondary education sector would receive.

Also, I have some insight into the organisation, AMIDEAST, working with them for two years in Yemen. I know that the situation may or may not be the same in Oman, but the office in Yemen was the most professional and supportive organisation that I have worked for over the past ten years in the 'TEFL game'. Yes, I worked really hard there, but loved the teaching and the students, and felt that I was actually doing something meaningful with my time.

Such a job would be best suited to perhaps the spouse of someone who is already set up in Oman. Obviously this is not a job for someone wanting to top up their bank account or pay off their student loans.

Again, this isn't a "real job." This is more of a "year abroad" or "summer school" or "semester abroad" for education students in another country.

It is not the usual AMIDEAST position. They are merely providing local expertise in the Gulf.
