Just getting ready to make a visa run to Finland. Can anyone recommend me a safe and inexpensive hostel to stay in? I will probably need to be there at least 2 weeks. |

when I went there Helsinki was incredibly expensive. Luckily you have 2 weeks so I'd recommend going to another city. Tampere is 2 hours by train and much cheaper. Try hostel sofia, stayed there and it was pretty good. Central and (as Finland goes) reasonably priced - 30e a night for a dorm. Doubt there will be too many people around though! |

30E a night sounds reasonable for Finland. I found a hostel in Helsinki once for about the same price. Don't remember the name, though. Are you taking the cheapo bus fur 10E from Ploschad' Vostaniya? |

Finland is very safe as long as you stay away from boozing Finns. They tend to get aggressive when drunk and fights break out easily. Many times those fights involve knives. Otherwise, the place is safe to the point of being boring. |

it's all relative. compare it to Glasgow (knife-crime capital), it's a kindegarten.
of all the things you think of about Finland - nokia, santa claus, saunas, i can't say knife crime springs to mind...[/quote] |

May I suggest you re-post this under General Europe Forum, where you are more likely to receive replies? Finland does not come under Russia and CIS. |

You need hollysuel - she lived in Finland for some years. You might even just send her a pm. She's currently posting on the General/Newbie boards. |

You see things as a typical foreigner with little contact with Finland does. Due to the proximity of Tallinn to Helsinki, I have regular contact with Finns here (through my work and meeting tourists in our Old Town) and have travelled there quite a number of times, so I see the other side of Finns and their country, just like someone who works in Russia sees the people and situation there differently from his/her compatriots back home. I'm going back there next weekend. It's only 90 minutes by ferry and no visa is needed. I love the Schengen Zone! |

Luckily, based in Moscow, one can just get a sleeper to Kiev. Lovely city to be in. Still fairly cheap too. Living in St Petersburg it would be too distant to consider, I imagine. However, if the costs of living are quite different and you need to spend over a week outside the Federation, then might be worth looking into... |

I only put it here because I figured other people working in Russia have probably had the same experience of having to go to Finland for a visa run. |
