Dear ancient_dweller,
Your life, perhaps. The time I spent there has ensured a great retirement with no financial worries.
Plus, I enjoyed (most of) my time there.
Regards,
John |

hi
most well-paid jobs are not advertised. i believe they are found by keeping in regular touch with people you like, repect and who do professional jobs; not just contacting these people when you need something but ..... wishing them the best at xmas, easter and when it's their birthdays and so on.
Might sound small but people really appreciate these sorts of things esp when you visit them (even their children) when they happen to be ill or in hospital. I know I do and I am quite sure the majority of us would do too
I've attended a wedding to be best man for an ex-colleague who would get me a well-paid job within weeks if I ever gave this one up. And in the same way, I'd recommend he come here if he gave up his job and if there was a vacant position where I am.
My last three positions were found this way and it works. All you have to do is be pleasant, considerate, helpful and sociable with people you meet and work with.
if anyone left the place I am in at the moment, I sure as hell hope it wouldn't be advertised on the net. Who knows what sort of characters might turn up.
rather i'd recommend someone I know who can be relied upon to get the job done in a quietly confident manner with no f-ing up and f-ing around.
Forget trawling through the web (anyway, its bad for your eyesight).
Make contacts. You don't need to be a rocket scientist, just pleasant to be around.

Sure, private networking and word of mouth often work when it comes to finding positions and getting recommendations. I'm sure many in teaching have experienced something along these lines. When you're starting out in a new country/ region you're not likely to have those kinds of contacts initially. It takes time to build this and being on the spot means you can arrange to visit the places you'd like to get work - but you have to be on the spot in the first place.
I don't know about the ME but in many countries, especially for universities, colleges and high schools, it's a legal requirement to advertise the job. If you have the qualifications and experience needed for whatever region, deciding on institutions where you'd like to work and which have a decent reputation might be the way to go, rather than using snaky, money grabbing agencies (not all are bad, I know). A large number of them advertise jobs on online TEFL job sites. I think it'd be better to look for positions directly advertised on a prefered institute's website. |
