So,
Footprints is recruiting people to teach in Georgia. Georgia seems interesting, but the pay seems dismal. Has anyone done this program and NOT been dead broke?

it looks pretty cool! If i was a little younger I'd be up for it.
If it's money you want don't go into ESL! |

Footprints, along with Greenheart and Reach to Teach, are recruiters for TLG, Teach and Learn with Georgia, the government program in Georgia.
Peace Corps also has an English-teaching presence in Georgia.
TLGers get the same compensation regardless of which recruiter they come through.
Whether or not you can live on 500 lari per month depends on where you get placed in country, whether or not you remain with a host family instead of getting your own housing at your own expense, and your spending habits/expenses.
If you've got college debt, this is probably not the program for you.
For me, the 500 lari per month has thus far, been more than sufficient for my needs. That holds true for when I stay in my placement city. Rustavi. Every time I go to Tbilisi, my expenses shoot up for food/drink and for hostel stays.
If you're in a village, there will be precious little to spend your money on.
Some perks that offset the low salary - your round trip air is paid for and you get a cell phone that is extremely low cost per month. You may or may not have free-to-you internet access, again depending on your placement. (For example, your host family may have internet access.) |

I lived in Tbilisi where things are expensive and 500 lari a month was plenty, even after helping out on rent. Some people who went out all the time or always ate at the tourist restaurants spent it quick, but Georgia is really cheap. I would go out a fair amount, could go on excursions, I lived well on that amount. Also, Georgians never let you pay for anything. |
