Probably have to pay a fine/fee to replace it. According to the FEC itself, "in case of loss, the bearer should apply for replacement and it will be reissued after approval".

I still have my FEC from my first job. They never asked for it back when my contract ended. Does this mean there was something fishy with the job or did the school have connections to make the problem go away?

Who knows. Not everywhere is organised, so I suspect a lot of FAOs simply forget to get them back if they gave them out (and this might be why a lot prefer to keep them). They might get a slap on the wrist, a fine, a ticking off or a 'who cares', and that might depend on their guanxi. If you had the FEC in the first place, I wouldn't think there was something fishy with the job.

The FEC belongs to you, thus mine sits in the drawer below my computer.

Why on earth wouldn't you have it in your possession??

It's useless, so it's not worth fighting over with the FAO over.

New FTs should be making sure they have their passport (with RP sorted), clean apartments with functional equipment, bank cards, internet sorted, clear instructions, decent materials, monthly pay, a computer etc.

Your shiny new FEC at the bottom of a drawer is at the bottom of a very long list of things you should be worrying about after arriving. If you do actually need it for something at a later date, ask for it.

As I have said before, I'm sure some schools keep it because otherwise, they don't get it back (or when it is lost, they find out the week the FT leaves and it is a hassle for all).

I have my FEC also. But, I think it is wise to choose your battles.
The FEC just does not seem worth fighting for/about.

i don't have my FEC handy but the last page says something like the FT will give the FEC to the school at the end of the contract. this implies that the FT should hold it during the contract. however it's useless, i've been able to keep a couple of mine but had to return most.

IF YOU PLAN TO WORK IN CHINA FOR A SECOND YEAR OR MORE
...
make sure you get a computer scan of the page with your photo and
the page across from it with the information in it. this will help your new
employer apply for a new FEC.

My FEC isn't all that shiny, besides all the gold lettering.

And since I've been here five years I don't have a 'long list' of things to do.

My list:
1. Wake up
2 Live life

I reiterate, FEC belong to you, not the school.

EDIT: The inside sleeve contains this: "The bearer of this Certificate is a foreign expert confirmed by the State Administration of Foreign Expert Affairs of the PRC ... yada yada. The bearer is entitled to conveniences and treatments for foreign experts provided by the guv of the PRC."

Personally, I'd rather have it in my hands than in my bosses.

it doesn't belong to you anymore than a rented apartment does.

read the last page where it says you need to return it.

something that belongs to you, would not have to be returned.

picking straws i guess, but not much happening these days before school-- haha-- do you really care about your fec? it's useless for everything.

Yes, picking straws indeed. The FEC is not useless. Some folks do not like to carry their passport and the FEC can substitute as identification in many situations. In my experience, hotels and banks will often (not always) accept them as I mentioned earlier. Police also will accept it in lieu of a passport depending on why you are being asked to show ID. The FEC belongs to the foreigner, not the school. If it is worth making trouble for or not is entirely up to the teacher but it does in fact belong to you for the duration of your contract barring any unusual circumstances.

I would not permit a school to hold my passport or my FEC, but maybe that's just me.

I have used my FEC book to buy train tickets on the high speed Nanjing to Shanghai line. I carry it in lieu of my passport if I don't need to book a hotel room. Works fine for train ticket purchases.
