Yes I took the course only route with credit so it cost me around $2600 per semester I think per semester and it since i got credit I was able to use financial aid to pay for my tution, I went through University of Idaho. They do offer a student visa, it was a pre-collge visa If I remember correctly and I did plan on applying for student visa at the time but ended up taking to long and as I was only studying there 6 months. I ended up doing a short trip to Taiwan and back on break between semesters to get another 90 days. Don't know if you can do that anymore haven't been back to Japan since 2007.

Well that's much cheaper than Waseda for sure. Waseda is cream of the crop and when I do things I like to do them the best way possible, but I also have serious qualms about going broke in Japan.
I want to stay a full year and work in Japan afterwards, probably permanently. [/quote]

I have a college student visa and am studying Japanese at a langue school. (i've been told the precollege doesn't exist anymore). My experience was a bit different as i came here as an ALT but changed my visa after my contract ended. My COE took around a month or two to come in I think but due to the lack of people coming in from outside Japan (due to the earthquake) it may go a lot faster for you.

Like was mentioned before I had to prove I could pay for classes and in my case although I had enough in savings they wanted income reports so I ended up saying my parents were paying (showing their income reports) but paying for it myself.

As some one mentioned find out what countries most of the students are from. My school is mostly Chinese and Koreas thus those who speak English (or similar languages) as their 1st language fall behind. Also find out the text book! Some schools use their own which may not be as good as the more well known ones out there.

I can't really recommend a school. There's one in Yokahama run by Stanford (http://www.stanford.edu/dept/IUC/) and one in Hiroo that i've heard good things about. http://www.japaneselanguage.net/
