Hi,

I am considering moving to Nanjing to work with ef and I am looking to see if anybody has worked for them? Is Nanjing a nice place as it seems cool?

Any info would be great regarding accommodation, lifestyle etc..

Cheers

I currently live in Nanjing, and wouldn't be here without a sweet package and a good group of friends. The city SUCKS and has the worst weather of anywhere I've been in China. It is easy to find Western goods, but the cost of living is super high here even when living a "Chinese lifestyle."

So, if I were you, I would ask EF to place you elsewhere.

I worked in Nanjing for a year, I wouldn't put it high on the list of places to return to. However, there is far far worse places someone could find themselves.

The Dos at EF Nanjing is cool, your teaching buddies will help you (as long as you do the right thing), you will work hard, but the experience you gain will be invaluable. There is a very good scene for westerners in NJ and there are a couple of western style supermarkets. The pollution is disgusting, but that's a given for all big cities in China.

I was in Nanjing for a year, although not at EF. I thought Nanjing was a decent city to live in, but it depends on what you're looking for. It's not a huge metropolis like Shanghai, so you be may be disappointed if you're coming from somewhere like NYC. Nor does it have the quaint charm of small cities like Suzhou. It's pretty much a medium city. I liked the proximity of Nanjing to other interesting cities. I liked that it was big enough that I could enjoy the downtown area where the expats hung out, find expat markets, discover new corners of the city on days off. But it wasn't so big that I felt lonely and anonymous, swallowed up by some huge city that I couldn't really get acquainted with (like I felt in Tokyo). There are some nice, green places to go on the outskirts of the city. It's a good mix of traditional and modern(ish).

It's hot as heck, though. And it's quite polluted, although that's nothing new in China. Hangzhou is the only place I remember seeing blue sky.

There appears to be a whole lot of crappy traffic in Nanjing. Jams everywhere at all periods of the day. Especially near the bridge over yangtze River. Aside from that, there also appears to be a lot of big green spaces and lakes, mixed in with some very interesting historical stuff.
