I don't know if there is a specific name for them in the U.S. Conversation school seems to fit what you described. Various countries have their own names ("eikaiwa" for Japan, for example).

Other jobs that might be available are ALT, where you work at a (or several) public school, and the local teacher is your supervisor working in the room at the same time.

Interesting. Both conversation schools and ALT positions seem to be interesting opportunities for someone as new to this as I am. Fresh out of the CELTA course, I still don't feel quite prepared for a full year long contract teaching on my own in an actual school, but working in a conversation school or simply as an assistant sounds like a good way to get my feet wet. Thanks. I'll look into this.
