How pleased I am that I bring a little ray of sunshine into the life of another !
I said "Payday' and on reflection that is an improvement. When I was young and foolish I used to look forward to payday and getting legless.
Now I do not get legless but I still like payday ! I have found other things to spend my money on. And I lead a righteous and blameless life. I must be one of the Elect of God I think. Glad I am not one of the other lot (ie those who are foreordained to eternal Hellfire - probably in a place much like Dave's ESL Cafe.) |

The things that make me happy.
My son and my daugther
Good music
Dancing Tango
My morning walks
Payday
and a good sleep.
We are only truly happy when daydreaming about future happiness. |

Why has nobody mentioned time here on Dave's
For me watching a decent football match with a beer and friends. I can't wait for the Euros to begin. |

looking out over the river from the church's bell tower.
Russian pastries.
Riding my bike.
breathing fresh air.
wearing old clothes.
staring into a fire.
being alone.
reading about monks.
talking with interesting people. |

Lessons that succeed even better than anticipated (happens normally when I recycle them with my next class);
when wind makes a sultry Guangdong summerday bearable;
when my 70-odd year old neighbour and his wife tell other neighbours in their vernacular Cantonese that "that foreigner is our neighbour....";
when I receive yet another friendly PM; |

Receiving an unexpected hug or kiss from my 5 yr. old son.
Spending quality time with friends and family.
A nice drive on a quiet scenic road with nice music on the radio.
Nature.
Watching the sunset on a beach (sounds like such a cliche I know! )
Receiving an unexpected cheque in the mail rather than bills! (Happened to me once in my life time. Don't expect it to ever happen again. )
Having friends over for a meal and BBQ's.
Being healthy.
SEX!

mangoes
going snorkelling on reefs and swimming with schools of beautiful fish
hugging my friends without speaking
lying in bed listening to rain on the tin roof
golden light shining off tropical trees and grasses
being even remotely close to nature
playing music
listening to music
sitting in the cinema with a huge box of popcorn watching a brilliant film
walking
I have to stop here, or continue for ever, because the thing that makes me the happiest is that I am finally the happy person that I was trying for so long to become. |

In no particular order:
my seven-year-old daughter,
my wife,
super-spicy-nearly-toxic-with-heat-Thai-food,
Cruzan rum (recently discovered in the back of the liquor cabinet),
libraries,
bookstores,
one day international cricket matches,
warm sunny days in New Zealand,
massive surf in Hawaii,
strong French roast coffee with fresh cream,
the first glimpse of green grass when walking into a Major League baseball stadium,
a no-problem smooth ESL lesson where the students suddenly click and are able to use the language not only well, but without effort,
mangoes. |

shouldn't that be, "I'm not young enough to THINK I know everything"? |
No. Oscar was quite subtle in his ostentatiousness
Johnslat - I tried to write a serious reply as requested by the initial poster, but I failed. To expand on my flippancy, it does seem that most people go though a stage in later life where they either let go of their prejudices and pretenses or become bitter. Many have trouble letting go of the delusion that they're all-knowing and infallible - a lie established for the 'benefit' of their offspring, and one which many come to believe. |
