I'm beginning to explore teaching in Saudi Arabia. Why are all the contracts so shady?

They never specify in the contract where you will be working. It just states that you will be placed somewhere in the Kingdom.

They are full of spelling/grammatical errors.

They use He on female contracts as well.

They state you might work on Thursdays and upto 48 hours?

During university breaks you may be assigned to do other work for the company ??

I'm kind of discouraged about working there now. Anyone have a direct hire lead for Princess Noura University. I want to see what the contracts are like.

This, my dear, is that you're considering working for the dregs of education. To them, it ain't pretty, but whatever gets the job done.

Do you enjoy the prospect of indentured servitude...or do they still teach that in History classes?

It's what's for dinner!

Dear bashirmu,

Be patient, the few good folks in this forum will give you more meaningfull answer than what you got so far.

As for direct hire, try to search earlier threads on "PNU" or "Adwa" which is got the main contract. Then PM some of the teachers that were going there and my guess is they might give more info after they get there.

I hear that the Adwaa contract is a good one!

It's one that "others" have turned down, tho!

On the subject of contracts I have a question, which I hope someone can answer. Most of my contract is pretty clear but I am not sure how this clause can be enforced "The 2nd Party shall not work for any other competitive company or perform the same activity performed by the 1st Party for 2 years following the expiration of this contract without permission from the 1st Party."

What if they don't offer me a new contract?
Is this something that can be legally enforced?
If I go Direct-Hire, would that be a loop-hole?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated

After you leave their employ, leave the Kingdom for two years. Only a "fool" would accept such a condition! Nobody should "own" you or force your professional banishment for two years if you successfully complete your contract!

To answer your questions:

1.) Who cares, they obviously don't!

2.) You bet your bippy, if they catch you!

3.) Yes, arguing the point that you should ALWAYS go direct. Cutting corners will only cut you in the end.

I hope to God that you haven't already signed something like that!

It's a tiresome refrain!

Thanks It's Scary. Pretty much what I thought but I wanted to check before everything is finalized. I didn't see anything in this forum about this specific rule but my searches end up with little, or nothing.
Cheers

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this refers to the Letter of No Objection (LONO/NOC) needed if someone has worked in KSA within two years of starting a new job. If this employer gives you a LONO when you leave their employ, then they are in fact giving their permission for you to accept another job in KSA any time after leaving this job. Of course, this only applies to Saudi Arabia, i.e. you could turn right around and go to work in a neighboring M.E. country without a problem.

MEB Cool

I don't disagree, MEB, but therein lies the rub. If s/he finishes his/her contract and is offered another, but refuses because of greener pastures elsewhere, both you and I know that the employer will feel rebuffed and, very likely, will not give a LONO. Then again, there are some, by policy, that just will not issue a LONO. That's the main reason I turned down a position with PSU in Riyadh last year. No LONO, no matter how good your service is the policy of the Uni.

OP. I'd check on this, but whatever answer you receive, remember, policies and "people's words" change with the direction of the wind.

It's just my opinion!

Be careful before signing any contract.

Once you sign, there is no turning back. Contracts are designed to protect and benefit the employer.

There really is no escape.

It's scary!

...I'd end posts with "It's Captain_Fil!", but that just don't make no sense! Laughing

P.s.- If I were you, I'd tell my avatar to lay off the caffeine!

Thanks for having the perfect username. I'm having so much fun! Mr. Green

As for my avatar, it is animated. It's the Flash. Animated avatars are more fun than ordinary ones.

Adwaa is NOT a direct hire. their job ads are misleading. you're working for Saudi British Centre. no guarantee of PNU.

oh how i wish this site worked in Saudi! I wonder if anyone has any real direct hire leads for Princess Noura University. the recruiter (Adwaa) on the phone had a really heavy odd English accent, couldn't quite pinpoint where he/she was from. He/she told me PNU does not do direct hires...but i'm guessing thats what she's supposed to say
