Hi all,

My name is Daniel and I am a CELTA qualified English Teacher currently living and working in Berlin. My wife and I (who is an Italian Citizen) want to move on to pastures new and were thinking about the possibility of trying China, Thailand, Vietnam or Hong Kong.

I keep running into questions regarding the Visa. My wife is not a qualified English teacher and therefore would be entering a country as part of a dependent visa. In most countries I am looking at, that means she is unable to work. In some cases, it seems she is even unable to look for work. Is this the on-the-ground case or are some countries more leniant.

My wife was hoping that once I have found a job and we have moved, she could start to look for work and apply for a job as part of the dependent visa. I am getting mixed responses from people regarding this and not sure where I should turn now. Some people say she could change her Visa to a work-permit in country and other people say she would would need to leave and apply from out of country.

I am getting a bit lost and don't know where to turn...

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

thanks,

daniel

See your reply in the general forum but one more thing I should add since this is country specific:

You say that you are a "CELTA qualified English Teacher".
Do you also have a degree (in anything)?

If yes then you can get the non-"B" visa and work permit and she can get the non-"O" as a dependent.

IF no, you do not have a degree to go with your CELTA, then you won't be getting the work permit and she probably won't get a dependents visa.

Hi,

Yes, I have a BSc from a British University and my wife has a BSc and an MSc from an Italian University. Non O Visa allows someone to work or not?

Yes, you can easily find work complete with "B" visa and work permit.
She can easily get a non-0 visa.

She probably can't legally work on an "O" (won't get a work permit from the labor office) BUT:

i) She will get offers of work without the WP (illegal but frequently done)
ii) With a masters degree she should be able to find work in her area of expertise and get her own non-B with WP.

Thanks for your reply. Would she have to leave the country to change her Visa from dependent to working visa after receiving an offer of work?? Or could this be done in-country?

As long as she has 21 days or more remaining on her current status of sojourn she can change her status "in-country".
