The last time I was in China 2003 I took a trip from Hong Kong to Yangshuo. I must have received at least 5 differen't offers in 2 weeks. Yangshuo is a tourist haven, people from all over China pass through there and I met alot of people. At the time I was just on vacation and wasn't planning on staying, but if I was I could have had a job easy. China is in desperate need of foreign teachers = the best job market in the world. The pay isn't the greatest, but in China you will be laughing. If you like to travel, climb mountains, rock climb, eat the best food in the world, this is the place. |

Trod,
I have been looking for info in the climbing scene in China, sounds like you might know a little about it. I'm going to be in Shanghai, are there any good crags relatively nearby? Can you get your hands on quality equipment should the need arise, or am I gonna have to ship replacements from home? Appreciate any advice you can give me.

There is not too much around Shanghai for climbing believe me I've looked into it. About 5 hrs west in Anhui Province there is awesome climbing to be found around Hangshuan Mountain. Hong Kong is a good place to buy equipment, also in Guilin or Yangshuo. Climbing is just taking off in China, Yangshuo is by far the best place to climb with many outfitters setting up shop there. I heard that there is a climbing gym in Shanghai, good place to meet others to plan climbing trips with. Hope some of this helped you out.

And it is quite misleading to claim jobs are just waiting to be filled by itinerant TEFLers. China "desperate" to fill positions? Come on... dream tonight, but not on this forum!
You need a good CV, and other credentials, plus a certain amount of good luck! |

Your definitley right! You need the basic credentials. If someone has these credentials they can easily find employment by just showing up. By just showing up you can see for yourself what the school is like, accomodations, talk with other foreign teachers, ect. Getting a job over the internet you are totally responsible for your own actions. Look at all the whining and complaining on this forum, I bet at least 85% of the unhappily employed got jobs over the net. With all the info we have about bad, crooked schools on this forum, people still make bad judgments. Private schools are businesses, they pay better than the Universities, but these schools are run by people who are rookies at running businesses. Remember that a market economy is new to the Chinese, and it is a work in progress. |

Roger...I agree and disagree with you. There are lots of jobs here but the trouble is finding a good one. Remember Gregska? He got to China (I'm not sure what city) but he recieved tons of offers in his first week, just not good ones. He did snap up a really great sounding job before his first week was over. I agree though that you do need a good cv and credentials. A lot of schools will also ask for a demo lesson too. Cheers |

Trod, my friends have just come back from there, they had a great time, very cheap and relaxed, lots of outdoor stuff to do. They also said that people were asking them if they could work as teachers. I plan to go there next month to check it out.
I see where Roger is coming from. You should have something to offer the students. They spend a lot of money to learn from foreigners and I think that deserves an obligation on your part.
Cheers |
