Try Travelcuts or World Nomads. I've used both of these companies in the past and both honoured any obligations they had when I filed a claim (four in total). |

I PM'ed you. You probably will need to have five postings on the board before you can reply, though. |

Is China really a place that will provide stability, security, and financial rewards? Not in my experience. The English teaching business is actually in a downturn in the area I live in.
That may not be the case in all of China. I would give it some serious consideration before bringing a wife and small children into this place. |

Thanks, Baozi Man. I had not heard of a downturn, so good to know. My children are adopted from China, so the location is largely driven by the desire to help them learn about their birth country firsthand instead of just through others. |

Not a parent myself; however, you might want to spend some time here without your children and then decide if you really want them to live here.
Life in the countryside of China is not bad. I've seen villages in rural Yunnan that reminded me of Beverly Hills. There is a lot of beauty and tranquility incountry areas. The jobs, however, exist in and around the cities. Schools must meet certain criteria to sponsor a foreigner. Most country schools do not meet the criteria, thereby making employment in those places difficult to find.
I can't imagine how city life in China can be good for children. It's not good for adults. From about 4 years of age, the children begin training to become mindless zombies, i.e., rote memorization, patriotic songs, group activities where individuality and originality are discouraged. Is that what you want for your children?
A Chinese American friend of mine whose family has been in the States for 5 generations brought her young son to China. After he'd been here a while, he said to his Mother, "I sure am glad great grandpa went to America." |

Ha! Nice story. Maybe living there for a while would help the kids understand that they got a nice deal when mom and dad adopted them!
We have investigated home schooling, augmented by a structured Internet program, and we believe it is viable. Others have mentioned "experimental" schools in the cities that focus on English instruction. This seems like a possibility since my kids' Mandarin is ... merely OK for a second-year elementary school level. But I do indeed worry about indoctrination. And, I can assure you, our political leanings are not Communist.
Also, neither my wife nor I believe that we would be living in China for the rest of our lives, but rather a few years. After that, anything is possible. |

This can work. I knew a couple with two kids and they did home schooling and some education online with their school back home (over a period of three to four years as I recall). They had no problems and the kids turned out just fine.
Go for it, your kids will appreciate the effort you made to connect them with their homeland. Good luck. |
