Greetings all,

I have applied to the ECC in Japan. They are interviewing in Toronto weekly. "a face-to-face interview, teaching demo and grammar test will be required." What does a teaching demo entail? How hard is this grammar test? Any input would be appreciated.

I reside in Denver and Teach ESL part time to Spanish speakers. This is my first teaching gig overseas. Shocked

On the demo lesson part, they normally want to see how you would present some function or vocabulary set or grammar point, from the intro to the wrap-up. This can tell them a lot about your approach to the classroom and your knowledge of the field; also how well (or not) you may 'fit in' to the teaching context they are recruiting for.

I expect Glenski and the other Japan regulars will be along soon with more and better info specifically for the Japanese teaching context - if you have not posted this in the Japan forum, I suggest that would be helpful to you.

When I was a newbie I did a teaching demo for AEON in Chicago. They are looking for how knowledgeable you are, how you perform and present yourself and what your vibe or energy is in front of others when you are teaching. They said I did well on my demo and offered me a job. If you have experience teaching already then you should do just fine.

"How hard is the teaching demo?"
Well, if you've never done one and never had any experience teaching, it will be very difficult. Just what sort of answer did you want? You will either be given a topic before the interview date, or on the spur of the moment, and you will have to design and conduct 5-15 minutes of a lesson based on that. Your "students" might be real ones, or they might be the panel of judges, or they might even be your competition!

Do a search for ECC and AEON demo lessons to see what others have written.

The grammar test. Same thing. Answers are already on this site. Do a search. It's 100 questions, multiple choice, and you have to know grammar and at one point some TEFL terminology.
