I am hearing that Apollo in Saigon/HCMC did not renew contracts for veteran teachers and is now hiring new teachers and paying $14 per hour.

Is this true? Or, is this false?

This would be interesting to know if it is true.

Several larger schools are now advertising for teachers from abroad. Why? Cheaper, younger, gullible and too stupid to say no to bad behavior from management.

At least for part time, this is untrue. I was offered 19/hr.

Salary: 1085 USD 1400 USD (before tax) per month, depending on qualifications, experience and hours worked salary and benefits paid in Vietnamese Dong, tax is payable on a sliding scale, most teachers pay 10-15%

So I emailed Apollo, however I'd like to be given more information about the school and working for them in general. I'm a new teacher, fresh off the ILA Celta and I am a little green.

What are their resources like (do you have to pay for your own photocopies?) Do they help you assimilate and allow you to watch classes before your start? What other professional development do they offer?

Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated.

Well, again very interesting. However, since you stated that you are a new teacher and green, I am more than happy to help you in your search and to make a few comments about apollo.

First, apollo is known in the EFL community as a somewhat reputable EFL school in Vietnam. It is also considered one of the lowest paying of these schools. Furthermore, see their latest ad and the numbers dont add up. Finally, I have experience being offered work there in a senior management position and the terms and conditions changed during the interview. The owner stated don't focus on the salary but your future at Apollo, however, I told him very clearly that he was dishonest, immoral and to take a long hike on a short pier. Also most teachers leave after one year because they can find teaching that pays a higher rate.

Also don't belieeve what a school says that they will offer you, must sign a contract first and that is the evidence. And i dont think that apollo is paying 19 usd an hour to new EFL teachers.

Best of luck with your job search.

I have been told first hand by people flying into VN to work at Apollo that during the interview, oops....the wage/salary is actually lower than what they said before the face-to-face, interview.

And the owner knowing full well that once a contract is finished most mgrs and teachers move on.

Yes, a LOT of teachers cut their teeth at Apollo, learn a good deal about teaching, get better, but then move on to greener pastures.

They don't want to retain teachers, just keep bringing in new, and starting all over again.
