Well what do you think. Any problems teaching the "Time Warp" dance to kids/teenagers in China? in the context of Halloween? . After all Rocky Horror was/is arguably a famous cultural experience for many of us Smile

Wouldnt you want to teach about Halloween from a Western cultural perspective rather than a modern take on it ie Rocky Horror Show?
Im a little taken aback when FTs 'teach' their personal interests/enthusiasms/diversions.

personally, i loves the rocky horror show. must have gone
to the theater/theatre/cinema at least a hundred times.

but teach it? i don't think so.

i can imagine the response from the middle school administration
and parents when they see the vocabulary list.

"mommy, whasa trainspektible?"

i suppose the uni students will study caligula?

But how is ONLY the Time Warp dance associated with Halloween? I mean, the entire movie is somewhat Halloween-ish related, but taken out of context the dance and song is just . . . a song and dance. And just try to explain what "Unconventional Conventionalists" means!

Make sure you put on your white monkey costume first to help perpetuate the old FT stereotype!

Bad idea. Rocky Horror is a famously gay "cultural experience." Not that there's anything wrong with that.

ymca? chicken dance? time warp?

i think teaching these easy dances as a warmer activity to sleepy college students at 8:30am to be somewhat entertaining...the chicken dance def. wakes them up...and they seem to enjoy it...

For Halloween you are going to show "The Time Warp"? Shocked Shocked

Wouldn't the "Monster Mash" make more sense?

That or 'Thriller'. My students love Michael Jackson.

The video linked to above is a travesty! If you must show "The Time Warp" only the original will do:

http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XMjE2NTE0NDEy.html

Or you can make it more current (albeit never as good as the original) and show the "Glee" cast version:

Rocky Horror isn't my kind of gay. I just show "A League of their Own"

I would also be mortified if I were to ever show it to my classes. I mean, they're my students. It is like watching a sex scene with my parents. No thanks.

RHPS has a CULT following. Showing the Time Warp will leave as accurate an impression of Halloween as "R**fer Madness" would give of American youth and attitudes toward drug use.

Chinese students have a really jaded, unrealistic view of American society because the media that they watch from America tends to show super-violent and smarmy movies. Almost everything the average Chinese student (that I know) sees are mostly over-the-top movies.

I don't think that Chinese students need to see Tim Curry as a drag queen.

If you were teaching a western film history course (and were actually qualified to teach such a course) I can see how showing the film could be appropriate.

From where I sit, I think the idea of showing ANYTHING from the RHPS to Chinese student is idiotic and irresponsible.

Don't try to screw your head onto their shoulders.

I worked with an American teacher once who insisted on showing Thelma and Louise to all her classes - especially those with a high female to male ratio.
I couldn't believe it and still can't.
Not sure if it was Mr Pitt's abs or the sexual violence or what.
The films we show are to support the language learning.
I have shown The Parent Trap - Lohan version, countless time and my 20 somethings lap it up.
Simple romantic story. Easy to grasp characterisations and loads of phyical comedy.
A sly look at some of my hardboiled, 'too cool for school', boys during the romantic bits shows they are following the story and getting something out of it.
