|

Dear all,
I am shortly going to apply for a Partita IVA for freelance teaching work. Could anyone give me an idea of the rates I should charge for a) private language schools b) companies c) universities? I am going to see an accountant as well but it is often more helpful to receive advice from colleagues! I have heard for example that say the school pays in a standard contract of 18 euro an hour..with a partita IVA you should ask 18 euro an hour plus 40% to cover tax and INPS. But I really have no idea and would really appreciate any advice/comments. I am an experienced teacher and specialise in Legal and Business English. Many thanks in advance for any posts received, Sophie |

Hi Sophie
The extra 40% you'd charge wouldn't cover you for tax and INPS. If you charged 10, plus 40% and therefore received 14, the 40% of that you'd "pay" in tax would be 5.60, leaving you with 8.40 net. I think the rate you need to look at is something like 165% of what you want to earn net. (Can't remember offhand - do a few calculations to get the exact figure.)
But back to your original question about pay rates. I think a lot is going to depend on where you are, and what the market will bear. I normally charge around 30 an hour (gross) for state school work, but others I know charge more. I've also been paid 50 an hour for some uni work, and more corporate training work. The company I worked for in Rome a few years ago charged out teachers for corporate training work at between 35 and 45. Specific skills such as legal English would probably be billed higher.
Don't forget: for companies the rates you charge are all costs of doing business, so if you've got a big company, you'll probably (but not always) be quizzed about your rates. Play it by ear a bit, but I hope others will chime in with their experiences of pay rates. Would be helpful for everyone! |

Dear Teacher in Rome,
Thanks for such a prompt and helpful reply. Yes, it would be interesting to hear from others as well, particularly in relation to what I should charge a private language school (not a state school). I have also heard that the Partita IVA light is going to be axed in the next few years so I will have to think about the implications of that!!
Thanks again,
Sophie |
