Let's forget the number - seems unbelievable! I've read that native English speaking teachers are needed in the state schools there. Can anyone enlighten me? |

As someone pointed out before, that announcement may have related to the elections
Anyway, isn't it strange that nobody has seen any job ads anywhere for any of the positions (apart from the Canadian recruitment agency which didn't have a real lead on the supposed jobs). Unless there are ads posted on a website for Kazakh or Uzbek teachers of English, for example |

There is an article in the May 2011 issue 376 of the EL Gazette :
www.elgazette.com
Turkey to recruit 40,000 native English speakers.
The Turkish Ministry of Education has announced plans to recruit 40,000 native English speakers as part of a 5-year project to improve the way foreign languages are taught. The government hopes to attract 10,000 qualified English teachers a year over the next 4 years and will automatically issue work permits to teachers recruited under the scheme.
The teachers will accompany Turkish teachers of English in the classroom and in extracurricular activities, focusing on improving the conversational skills of both students and teachers.
" The new system focuses on speaking "said Unal Akyuz, head of the Ministry of Education's projcts department. "We aim to show that English language education is not limited to teaching grammar, but that speaking and writing are important as well".
In response to concerns that the native English-speaking teachers could displace Turkish teachers, Akyuz emphasised that the guest teachers would work alongside local teachers than replace them, and added they would be paid roughly the same as their Turkish counterparts.
The project would also include a distance learning programme involving 1,000 English teachers from the USA, multimedia centres and modern English education sets for use in schools, and plans to send 3,000 Turkish teachers of English abroad for professional development such as DELTA and CELTA certifications. English cafes will also be set up and popular cartoons will be broadcast in English with Turkish subtitles to encourage students to practise English outside the classroom. |

If your accommodation is paid for is 1500USD a month enough to live on comfortably in Istanbul, assuming you're not a shopping maniac or a party animal? |

Doesn't look like it will get off the ground. We should have heard something by now, especially if it's to start in Feb next year. |
