Yes, it is off the mark. On the other hand, sixteen years in the Gulf (9 in the Emirates and 7 in KSA so far) have shown me without a doubt that few non-Muslim western or Asian women of substance would come to Saudi Arabia and actually like it. By "substance" I mean someone educated, professional, self-reliant, intelligent, resourceful, someone who wishes to participate in life meaningfully. There are always exceptions, of course; perhaps Cleo might be one.

Frankly I also find it personally difficult to respect the more reactionary Muslim women such as the Saudi doctor who said "Why should I want to drive? I worked hard to become a doctor."

I'll work hard to make sure she's never my doctor. Oh--that's right--she'll never see any male patients anyway, I suppose. (Although back in '93, in Jeddah, I had a very, very nice Arab lady ophthalmologist. Three cheers for her. I bet in the real world she'd drive to work and wear what she wanted.)

I've lived in 11 countries worldwide outside my home country for a total of 35 years. News Flash: KSA is not the real world.

But since the lady being discussed here (Mysterious) IS Muslim, wouldn't that make your statement:

A friend of mine who is there on the 3 month visa has a couple of mature students as friends, he is also friends of their family. They will send money for him, there are ways around everything............

But isn't that a little risky? I don't know (not being Nigerian,) but wouldn't the sender have to have some rather confidential info - bank account number, routing number, maybe more?)

Couldn't that info be used in some nefarious ways?

Of course, you wrote that they were friends . . . .

Having to hand over your banking information to others seems quite risky, and you're also risking your money--the reason you went there in the first place. I sure wouldn't risk my nuts that way! Laughing

Not to mention it's really squirrelly to have to handle your money in such a manner!

Is it possible to get back to the original posting?

I'm applying for jobs like crazy, starting to get nibbles, and hoping to get hired soon. As with some of the posters, I have bills back in the States I need to pay so sending money home is imperative. Can one go outside of KSA, let's say on a monthly basis, and send money via a company like Western Union to the States?

The above is probably a dumb question so please be patient with a newbie.

To answer your question, YES, and it does not appear likely that they will implement their new policy anytime soon. There are much better options than Western Union for sending money.

Agreed. I wouldn't use Western Union for anything but rare, small amounts sent to some girlfriend in the Philippines or some other place where they seldom have bank accounts.

To leave the KSA you need an exit-re-entry visa, which costs $130 for a six-month multiple-entry version.
