I am leaving my present position in Tokyo ..for a more lucrative one in the UAE. My question is this...I still have a valid work visa for Japan..independent of my current (rather former) employers...Is ther any way to keep it valid?
This is not a big deal..I was just thinking if things don't work out in Abu Dhabi..I may want to head back to Tokyo.

Thanks

If you try to leave the country without a re-entry permit, you will be asked to surrender your ARC at passport control. Obviously, it will be difficult to re-enter the country without it.

I'm not sure how long a re-entry permit is valid for.

When I left Japan, I was told that I would technically still be responsible for national health insurance payments if I kept my visa/ARC. I was told this by my local health insurance office.

Aren't they good for the duration of the visa?

They are good for the duration of the visa if you have a one year visa or 3 years exactly.

This is what my immigration officer told me when I asked how comes my re-entry permit expires a little before my 3 year visa does, since I too was under the impression that it was good for the duration of the visa... I'm wondering if he made a mistake and simply couldn't be arsed to change it Confused

If you signed on for a position at the ADWC, you WILL be coming back to Japan. They tend to tell people that they'll be stationed in Abu Dhabi, but fail to specify that it's the city of Abu Dhabi and wind up sticking people out in the "desert campus"! You see, the ENTIRE emirate is named bu Dhabi"! Kinda sneaky, huh?

Here's a story to read: http://adwcamp.blogspot.com/2011/09/miss-piggys-modus-operandi.html

Things aren't a whole lot better at the ADMC!

It's better to be forewarned, so you can be forearmed!

Kinda sneaky only for those that have no clue about global geography. Honestly, who doesn't know this or didn't learn this by year 5 geography/social studies classes!?

Guess that you didn't study is the grand old U S of A. Now, if you were schooled in Merry Ol' England, then it's old news as most UKers are desperate for some sun and flood those environs!

To more directly answer your question, most. Even President Clinton, who had the best briefers (my word) money could buy, still thinks that Dubai is a country, not just another emirate.

It's new information for most, believe it or not!

Thanks everyone for the info. and advice...I think I'll just let the visa go...I never used the Japanese Nat'l health anyway.

BTW...don't worry about me being another victim of HCT-anything. I did my time there way back in the Middle Ages...1990 to be precise.
I've got a job with a legitimate US contractor/corp. working for the THE UAE military. Looks like a good job (on paper at least) and nice housing in the city proper..this I've seen.
I do have some further questions as I have not worked in the Emirates in a number of years (went back for an interview...the place has changed...needless to say)...but I'll save them for the UAE board.

Well, thanks...I've worked for the military there before...and I know the scenario.

This is a very small operation... (only three of us...so far) and NO Emiratis directly involved. They sign the checks..and yes..they have signed the checks already...incl. flt/hotel etc to UAE and DC for interviews...expenses reimbursed...I only deal with the US liason guys.

GHQ is just near the top of a very long list of people, institutions etc. in the Gulf not to trust.

It's UAE military-speak. We could tell you, but then, we'd have to cyber-kill you!
Here's a hint: What did General McArthur call his seat of power in Japan during the Occupation?

It's SO darn obvious!

Dont hold onto your foreign registration card when you depart. Since youd still be a resident of Japan, youd be liable for Japanese taxes. Also, you wont be able to get your pension refund if youre technically still a resident.

Your visa may be stamped expired at the airport when you hand in your card, but it will save you a lot of hassles in the end.
