im a noobie and im looking at my options. id like to move to thailand or vietnam but there arent awesome jobs there like the ones in korea, hong kong, and taiwan from what i am reading.
i have a BA in sociology and an MA in teaching. i am certified to teach TESL, all ages, and social studies 7-12 so international schools will be hard to get hired in i feel. plus all my experience is in teaching elementary ESL.
is university the next logical step for me? am i qualified to do it? does it pay fairly well? can i find a university to teach in in vietnam or thailand? where do i find them? do they hire from abroard? these are some of things id like some input on. thanks everyone. |

With your qualifications you won't find a job as a lecturer in a university while you are applying from abroad. The notable exception would be in China.
International schools are not that hard to find (or get a job in) but your timing is off (mid year in Thailand as an example).
Also, you may make more in places like Taiwan, HK or Korea but the cost of living is also higher. I was working in Korea, earning ~$US40k + benefits and saving on the order of $15k per anum. Now I work in Thailand, earn about US$10k less and SAVE about US$5k MORE per year. Look at the whole package.
Coming from abroad, you are NOT going to land a "plum" job in your first year in SE Asia. It is about networking and showing that you are as good as your credentials say you are. As they say, "The proof is in the pudding".

You might be able to get a job at an intl school. Have you gone to intl school job fairs?
You could try unis. I don't know about the two countries, I do know that for China or korea you could get a uni job.I got a handful of offers from the latter while I was abroad. Have you tried posting on Thailand and Vietnam forums? |
