Would you consider teaching in Mexico or taking a vacation there?
Yes, I crave danger (and real tacos)!

I'm thinking of applying for a job as a sheriff in Mexico. Any advice?

Uhm, no!

The international tourist arrivals are increasing year on year, (Mexico is currently the 10th most visited destination in the world), the government, and particularly the Secretary of Tourism, are doing a fine job of promoting destinations outside of the beaches, and I have UK tour operators enthusiastically working with me to add more Mexico destinations to their portfolios.

...or was it just a gut feeling?

British Airways even reestablished their London-Cancun route earlier this year...

Thanks for doing your part to help the Mexican economy, Phil! And it's great to hear that the Mexican authorities are promoting non-beach destinations.

Yes, Phil, definitely it is happening here outside the Riviera Maya and Cancun. Were preparing for an influx of tourists here in Valladolid as Xcaret has just bought property in the center of town and will be constructing luxury hotels. Their plan is to use Valladolid as the epicenter of tours to Rio Lagartos, (flamingo waters), nearby fishing village of San Felipe, Ek Balam pyramid, Chichen Itza, the tequila musuem, etc. etc. So the expansion in tourist services is underway.

A luxury hotel in Valladolid, eh? Well, I guess that will be a bit out of my league. Are there any reasonably-priced hotels there?

There's nothing like getting the news from the locals! Wink I'll look into that one. The problem, I think, is that it's still difficult getting people so close to Cancn without them actually staying in Cancn (or R. Maya), and we run those same excursions from there.

I suppose if they are investing so much money, they know what they're doing!

I knnow this topic is a bit old, but I just came across it. My two centimos, I'd go to Mexico, or similar countries, such as Egypt. I havea couple reason, first, lots of good teachers are leaving, so there's a need for teachers.

That means you'll be likely to land a plum job, or at least have a better chance than before.

You can represent your country in a good way. You can show the locals that not ABC citizens are afraid of living there.

You'll watch history in the making.

Having a child, I know the risks, but I also know that kids open doors. I had some friends who travelled throughout Africa for about five years in their car. They're German, white, blond hair, blue eyes. They said they went through checkpoints where people had huge guns, the type you see in movies. When they saw the kids, they'd come over, play with them, offer them food, tell them jokes, etc. When they needed help, they'd offer to help them, fix the car, get medical help for the kids, and so on.

While I'm not advocating going to war torn countries, all I'm saying is that you have to take the news with a grain of salt. Just look at all the people on the forum and with kids! who are in Mexico at the moment.

Yes, in a nut shell, although I dont know what your idea of reasonable is. For me, the 20-40 dollar range is very reasonable for a hotel room. I put my friends up at the HOTEL MARIA DE LA LUZ. Their rates are within that price range and have received rave reviews from friends and posters on the THORN TREE alike. There are several others, like the HOTEL ZACI and HOTEL SAN CLEMENTE but I dont know what their prices are. If that is even too much for your budget, you can always stay at one of the two hostels in town, THE CANDELERIA or the HOSTEL FRAILES. Both are top notch hotels and have privates. Private rooms in hostels in the south here go for 250-350 pesos per night. Anyone wishing information, of course there are listings on the net.

VIOLENCE LEADS TO CONTINUED DECLINE IN TOURISM IN MEXICO

And any gains or increases in the market are a fraction of what they should be if the drug war was not in full swing.

Sad to see the HORRIFIC events occuring in my beautiful Mexico. Let's hope the PRI gets in in 2012 so the transformation can begin and the PRI can start cleaning up the HUGE mess the PAN has created in Mexico.
