Kev, when does your RP expire? Since your old passport was set to expire at the end of next March, the Churujing probably dated your RP to expire a week or two before that.
I wish I had a proactive FAO like yours ... |

| The guy in charge of getting renewed RPs at my school told me that I should bring my new and old passport (with the RP) to him right after the CNY holiday (around mid-February) and he would get a new RP affixed to my new passport. Does this sound legit to anyone in the know? Has anyone had this same situation and is this SOP? |
Yes, this is SOP. I also renewed my passport in the middle of one residence permit and carried two passports around till I got the next RP in the new passport. |

Which countries issue a replacement passport without cancelling any existing ones? The UK either retains the old one (it must be sent with the renewal application) and if you request the old one to be returned they cut a corner off the cover so it can't be used. Any unexpired validity up to a maximum of 9 months is added to the new passport's ten years.
It is different if you want to renew a UK passport while in China, they appreciate you need the old one for ID purposes but the moment they receive your application they invalidate your old passport electronically. |

Steve, the passports are cancelled once the new one is issued but the residence permit inside the old passport remains valid that's why you need to carry both of them for awhile. Once a new residence permit is in the new passport the old passport becomes a souvenir. |

| That's what I assumed but Kev's post was a trifle ambiguous (to me anyway!) and I wondered if he was actually in possession of two valid passports. And yes, of course, any valid visas/permits are not cancelled as they are issued by another country and only they can do that. |

| Well, I wasn't really asking about my new/old passports, rather the RP in the old, now NON-valid passport. They punched a couple holes in the cover to show it's no longer a usable passport. And, yes, my RP expires right around the time my now NON-valid passport was set to. So thanks for the answers. |
