There do seem to be some decent jobs on that site. I wouldn't rely too much on anything written in their forum or school review section though. It's long since been hijacked by a few prolific and obnoxious posters who think they have inside knowledge of every school in China and post criticisms on all of them.

Amen, brother! One of those very prolific posters is actually one of the (*snicker!*) moderators. Won't mention which one, but his 'net name starts with a "T" and ends with an "i". Sorry, to get off-topic, but anytime someone can call out that other website (and, by the way, the small handful of regulars are no friends of Dave's, that's for sure!), I'm happy to lend a hand.

They are everywhere. You can go through recruiters or cold call schools directly if you like.

Recruiters certainly aren't the most honest people out there, but they can connect you to an available school that may suit your interests very quickly. Contacting each university directly can be quite a grind because those China TEFL advertisements are often several years old and many of them already have teachers for the next semester.

True, but others are updated from time to time. I just checked the chinatefl ad for the school I work at and the contact info (the landline number and email, but not the name of the FAO) is current. Even if an ad is completely out of date, it provides a starting point - name and location of a school - for anyone who's job hunting. Not hard to get the missing info really.

Pandapandemonium, first a lot of the jobs on that site are university jobs (lower number of hours/lower salary). Anything from 4500-6000 and 14-18 hours per week is considered normal for a university job - most people looking for a job here have to recognize that.

Second, regarding the pathetic salaries you've seen advertised - schools can buy a lifetime membership on that site to advertise (our school has one). As one other poster already pointed out some of the ads are out of date and the out of date bits can include contact info, addresses, salaries and working hours. Website maintenance (contact/other relevant info) doesn't seem to be the strong suit of businesses here in China. So if I saw an ad posting a salary I thought was too low - but everything else looked good - I'd try contact them anyway and ask for current details. Got nothing to lose by asking. As far as the job search goes I see freely available contact info, smth not always easy to get on other sites, as being the most important info myself.

I found my current job (which I consider to be a very decent job) on chinatefl. I sent my rsum to 15 schools in Guangdong and Fujian. Seven sent me what I considered serious replies, and the school that replied most quickly and answered all my questions is where I am now. The first year my salary was 4500 for the standard university hours - 16. Five years later my salary is much higher and with fewer hours among other things. The job I had previous to this one - also from chinatefl but nowhere near as good as the job I have now. As with any other line of work, you're not likely to find your ideal teaching job first time around on any website. Most people have to put some time in down in the trenches first and work their way up.

OP, you can try angelina's esl cafe. i got my current job through them; it's not great, but it's good. i found the recruiters themselves to be very helpful, they even sent me holiday greetings (3 mths after i signed the contracts) offering extra help if i needed it.

Our HR just sent out a blast e-mail looking for mid-year teachers to start in February. Subject-area mainly, like maths, physics, chemistry, business, and of course IELTS faculty. School is OK, they are replacing the deadwood FAOs. You teach 18-22 sections a week. no Saturdays*.

Thanks Nomadish and Cyberkada for the tips.

I am working with Angelina's now. They got me two interviews for next week.
I was turned down yesterday via email from Pacican Shanghai. They hired someone with more experience with primary students.

Now that I have experience it is not enough for these employers.

Wish me luck!

Send me a pm with contact information at your job

In my opinion, race is playing a big role here. School owners and managers believe that they attract more students with white teachers. And some associate black teachers with the Africans who do quite a bit of shady business in China and may not be native English speakers.

The upshot is that you have to apply for more jobs than a white teacher in order to get an equal number of offers. How many more, I don't know. Maybe eight or 10 times as many.

Sad but true.

GWOW, I beg you to change your avatar. He looks like he has Tourette's or Parkinson's. I get a severe headache every time I try to read one of your posts. It is giving me epilepsy. Sad

I have used Daves for recruiting and for jobhunting. When I advertised on other sites, resumes trickled in; when I advertised on Daves, resumes poured in. When I apply for jobs posted on other sites, I get a few offers; when I apply for jobs posted on Daves, I get a lot of offers. Thats been my experience, take it for what its worth. Putting my resume on Daves and elsewhere, not much success. Dont know why and dont know of a good resume site.

I am not opposed to changing it. Give me a day or two to come up with another one.

Lucky Being Black, training schools are not your best bet. The parents don't want their kids around Black people. Racism is a learned behavior/attitude. It is passed to children from parents.

Criminally minded Africans don't help matters, either. In a large city near here, Africans were confined to the campus where they were studying military matters. It was believed by the administration that they should not be allowed to mingle freely with the people in the community

I recently heard that a very nice Asian nation near China is restricting its entire immigration policy due to the bad influence of Africans who were taking advantage of liberal immigration policies and causing problems. True or not, that is how Blacks are perceived by many.

If you are determined to stay here, you will be punished. I'm subject to racist taunts on a daily basis. I can't imagine what you will experience.
